The chaos over the Merriton Inner Sea was entirely suppressed before the morning star rose. A new day dawned over the golden coast.
Merriton Municipal Hospital.
Bodyguards patrolled the corridors outside the intensive care ward. The nurses conducted their rounds with trembling hands, quickly reporting the vitals to the attending physician. The doctor breathed a sigh of relief upon reviewing the charts and handed them to a striking young man nearby. The boy glanced at the two reports, turned, and walked toward the family waiting room.
"Grandpa," Julian announced, pushing the door open and handing the files straight to Caspian Ravenshire.
Aside from Alaric, Dorian and Victoria were also present, looking like seasoned actors.
When the couple had heard that The Shadow Chamber had engaged in a shootout with the Beaufort family on the cruise ship, they had turned pale with terror. If Balthazar had been captured alive, their three years of scheming would have been ruined.
Thankfully, fate had intervened. Balthazar died suddenly, leaving no loose ends. They were safe for now.
Caspian took the reports. "What did the doctor say?"
"Vivienne is fine. She just passed out from exhaustion," Julian replied. "The wound on Cyril's leg missed the major arteries. They extracted the shrapnel, but he needs bed rest."
Caspian nodded. "Cedric, tell Lennox to take good care of Cyril. Make sure his recovery isn't compromised."
Julian lowered his eyes to hide the complicated emotions swirling within them.
If it weren't for the blood test results, no one would have believed it. Cyril had managed to kill Balthazar while pumped full of a lethal dose of aphrodisiacs.
His willpower was inhuman. But Julian also felt a twinge of grudging respect—if that arrogant bastard hadn't been so relentlessly twisted, Vivienne would have been in real danger.
Unable to name the feeling in his chest, Julian retreated to an empty chair and sat down.
"Dad."
A knock at the door preceded Benedict Ravenshire's arrival. He strode in, his face grave.
Benedict shook his head. "No. He had a highly skilled operative with him. Almost all traces of his movements were erased. If Vivienne hadn't had the foresight to bring her tracker, we might not have even known he was heading back to Solenforth."
Hearing this, Victoria let out a silent breath of relief.
So useless! Julian grimaced, though his status as a junior family member kept him from voicing his disgust out loud.
Benedict looked at Caspian, and seeing the patriarch remain silent, continued, "The Volgaar Raiders on the ship were a coincidence. They were using the Beaufort ship as cover for a weapons deal. When our men boarded to search, the raiders thought we were there for them. They triggered the riot in a desperate bid to escape."
That's too much of a coincidence, Dorian thought, his expression tightening. He hesitated before asking, "What about Balthazar's death? He survived The Ulan Annihilation twice. Are you telling me he was killed by two teenagers?"
At the mention of Balthazar, a cold glint flashed through Alaric's detached eyes. He had seen the man's corpse with his own eyes—completely naked and humiliated.
"Based on the crime scene analysis, that's exactly what happened," Benedict said. Recalling the gruesome, chaotic state of the room, he shook his head with a sigh of admiration. "It was hell for those kids. To pull off a counter-kill in that kind of desperate situation... it's nothing short of a miracle."
Balthazar had fought in the brutal extermination campaigns of Ulan. His savagery was beyond typical depravity. Even two trained military officers might have struggled to take him down. To call it a miracle was an understatement.
