Caspian saw the guilt in Alaric's eyes and smiled, gently ruffling the boy's hair. "Alaric, the next time Vivienne gives you a hard time, try explaining yourself to her."
Alaric's gaze locked in place.
"Tell her that you didn't abandon her and Cyril out there. Tell her that you did a good job this time."

Long after Caspian had left, Alaric sat by the window, lost in thought.
He stared unblinkingly at the red cord bracelet on his wrist.
Everyone had called him cold and ruthless. On the day of his parents' burial, the entire Ravenshire family had been consumed by grief, yet he had outright refused to attend the service.
Later, Caspian had coaxed him up the mountain. He had held him close as the first handful of earth was thrown over the caskets. But the moment the graves were sealed, something inside Alaric had shattered. Ignoring everyone trying to stop him, he had thrown himself at the fresh graves, desperately trying to dig them back up with his bare hands.
Everyone thought he had lost his mind.
But he knew he wasn't crazy. He just couldn't bear to let his mom and dad go.
It was Caspian who had stepped in. Disregarding tradition, ignoring the family rules, he ordered the graves reopened and the caskets unsealed.
"Don't be afraid, Alaric. This time, say a proper goodbye to your mom and dad."
Because he had been so angry at them for constantly breaking their promises, he had thrown away the red cord his mother made for him. When his father had tried to comfort him through his bedroom door before leaving on that final mission, Alaric had refused to step out.
He didn't hate his parents. He wasn't unfeeling or cold-blooded. He simply couldn't accept the reality.
Because he knew that this loss was forever.
That was the only time in his life he remembered breaking down and crying. He had collapsed in tears over his parents' caskets and passed out. When he woke up, he was surrounded by strangers.

After driving Alaric away, Vivienne felt completely refreshed. She sat comfortably under the trellis in the courtyard, happily devouring her Vindrell delicacies.
Bianca had swung by several times that morning only to find Vivienne asleep. She hadn't expected much this time either, but the moment she saw Vivienne awake, she practically jumped for joy and lunged at her.
"Oh my God! You're finally awake!"
"*Gag!*" Vivienne nearly choked to death.
Bianca panicked and quickly patted her back. "Are you okay?"
Vivienne swallowed the massive bite of food and chased it with a gulp of water. "What do you think? Balthazar didn't hit me as hard as you just did."
Knowing she was entirely at fault, Bianca hurriedly poured her another glass of water. "I was just so happy! You have no idea, when I heard you were kidnapped, I almost died of a heart attack. And my mom? She had already hired assassins from Solenforth to hunt them down."
