Chaos Girl Rewrites the Script novel Chapter 405

There was an old saying that a patriarch needed to turn a blind eye to keep the peace. Caspian had always felt that Alaric was a bit too detached and devoid of human warmth, so letting Vivienne drive him up the wall wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

"No."

Alaric was fundamentally different from Vivienne. That walking disaster used her grandfather's backing to pick fights on a daily basis. Alaric, on the other hand, could be pushed to the brink of a migraine by her antics and would never utter a single word of complaint. It was exactly why Vivienne felt so utterly emboldened to torment him.

Caspian didn't expose the lie. He patted his shoulder again. "Sit."

Alaric gave a slight bow and took a seat beside him.

"So? Did you ask Vivienne what happened? What did she say?"

Thinking of how she had pointed right at his shoulder and bossed him around made Alaric speechless. "She claimed she passed out and didn't know anything."

Caspian burst out laughing. Vivienne was a master at playing the fool, and Alaric was excessively rigid. He could easily picture how massive a headache his straightforward grandson had dealing with that slippery little girl.

Alaric let out a sigh. "Grandpa, how can you laugh? She only acts like this because you let her get away with it."

"Ah," Caspian waved his hand dismissively. "It's not acting out. Cyril covering for his father is an act of loyalty. You wanting to uncover the truth and eliminate the threat is your nature. Vivienne choosing to sit on the sidelines and watch the show is her survival instinct. You are walking three entirely different paths. Making different choices is completely natural."

Alaric was taken aback. He looked at the old man with a clear, sharp gaze. "What about you, Grandpa?"

Caspian already suspected the Beaufort family was in league with Victoria's faction. If he simply pulled the thread on Cyril, the entire conspiracy would unravel. Yet he intentionally left Dorian and Cyril in Merriton City. Wasn't that just giving the mastermind a free pass?

Caspian's eyes were warm, yet undeniably powerful. "Alaric, I am the head of this family. My duty is to protect the foundation of the Ravenshire legacy."

Alaric thought for a moment, clearly disagreeing. "Grandpa, an ancient tree doesn't rot overnight. Decay starts at the roots. If we want it to survive, we have to find the source of the rot."

"And how do we do that?"

"Rip it out by the roots."

Caspian's gaze softened with a heavy sorrow. He spoke slowly. "Save them first."

"Grandpa?"

Alaric couldn't understand it. Caspian had ruled the Ravenshire empire with an iron fist for forty years. How could a ruthless patriarch possess such naive mercy?

Caspian knew exactly what he was thinking. His voice was steady. "Alaric, you need to understand something. That 'beyond redemption' person you're talking about... is still my son. A father is responsible for the sins of the child he failed to raise right."

Alaric stood frozen. He suddenly realized how profoundly insensitive his argument must have sounded to his grandfather.

Caspian knew everything. He could exercise his absolute authority as the patriarch at any moment, but before he brought the hammer down, he desperately wanted to fulfill his duty as a father one last time.
