In stark contrast to the 'loving father and devoted son' act in the Blackbriar Wing, things over at Silvercrest Hall were a complete mess.
Leander had been lecturing Julian the entire walk back. Julian let the words go in one ear and out the other. The moment he reached his bedroom, he popped in his wireless earbuds. Seeing this, Leander's blood pressure spiked. He marched over, snatched the earbuds out, and snapped, "Are you even listening to a word I'm saying?"
Julian crossed his legs and smirked. "Obviously not."
"..." Leander took a deep breath, his face icy. "I know you understand the stakes. You're just acting like a slacker to piss me off. But Julian, this time is different. Whoever gets to accompany the old man to Solenforth will be invited to attend the bilateral peace conference in their Congress. That is the international political stage! Do you know how many people spend their entire lives trying to reach that level? I need you to realize that, if only for your own sake, you absolutely must seize this opportunity."
Julian picked at his ear. "Give it up. I'm completely useless at whatever test this is. I can't win."
"You!" Leander rubbed his temples. "Can't you at least try to think of a way? Put in a little effort?"
Julian raised an eyebrow, shooting his father a sidelong, mocking look. "Effort? What kind of effort? You couldn't even put in the effort to get out of other women's beds when my mother was dying, so what gives you the right to tell me to put in effort?"
It was a lethal strike. Leander looked like he was about to have a heart attack.
Seeing his reaction, Julian's tone turned even more malicious. "Do you know why I can't beat Alaric or Cyril? Because I inherited your garbage genes."
A sharp pain seized Leander's chest. Clutching his heart, he turned and stormed out of Silvercrest Hall.
As soon as the man was out of sight, the flippant smirk on Julian's face vanished instantly.

The next morning, Caspian left early to attend the summit at Congress. The itinerary for the conference spanned two full days.
