Leander had been lecturing Julian the entire walk back. Julian let the words go in one ear and out the other. The moment he reached his bedroom, he popped in his wireless earbuds. Seeing this, Leander's blood pressure spiked. He marched over, snatched the earbuds out, and snapped, "Are you even listening to a word I'm saying?"

Julian crossed his legs and smirked. "Obviously not."

"..." Leander took a deep breath, his face icy. "I know you understand the stakes. You're just acting like a slacker to piss me off. But Julian, this time is different. Julian raised an eyebrow, shooting his father a sidelong, mocking look. "Effort? What kind of effort? You couldn't even put in the effort to get out of other women's beds when my mother was dying, so what gives you the right to tell me to put in effort?"

It was a lethal strike. Leander looked like he was about to have a heart attack.

Seeing his reaction, Julian's tone turned even more malicious. "Do you know why I can't beat Alaric or Cyril? Because I inherited your garbage genes."

A sharp pain seized Leander's chest. Clutching his heart, he turned and stormed out of Silvercrest Hall.
