Those words hit Kael like a barrage of flaming arrows, turning him into a human pincushion.
Kael wavered in the invisible wind. He understood every single word Preston said, but putting them together just didn't compute. However, there was one thing he did know: the consequences of this were going to be catastrophic.
Ever since the incident at the resort, Kael had picked up on Preston's interest in Vivienne.
Later, when Vivienne used the casino incident to blackmail them, Preston uncharacteristically just let it happen. Even back then, Kael sensed that his interest was far from ordinary.
And then there was the incident at the garden hotel. Preston, a man who never did a good deed in his life, actually stepped in to save Isabella Lexton. He didn't even lose his temper when Vivienne smashed up his multi-million dollar sports car. Putting all the pieces together, it was painfully obvious that Preston viewed Vivienne as a prize he intended to claim.
Preston was different from everyone else. He was an extreme hedonist who thrived on seeking out the most bizarre, twisted thrills. To achieve the ultimate rush, he would deliberately delay his gratification, feeding his appetite until it was completely ravenous before devouring his prey at the absolute last second.
Usually, Preston had two approaches to his targets: either he slept with them, or he played with them. The moment he satisfied either urge, he would toss them aside without a second thought.
Kael had seen how Preston trained his pets, so he knew exactly what was going on. Preston didn't just want to sleep with Vivienne; he wanted to play with her. But this kind of play was entirely different. It wasn't the casual teasing of a kept pet. It was luring her into a trap and slowly suffocating her.
The atmosphere in the hospital room suddenly turned incredibly eerie.
Preston had never intentionally hidden anything from Kael. For the Garland family to turn around and propose to the Ravenshires was a blatant slap to Preston's face.
What's more, Kael knew better than anyone that the one thing Preston despised more than anything was having his games interrupted. By anyone.
Josslyn looked at Kael with a bizarre expression. "You like Vivienne?"
"I don't! I really don't!" Kael panicked, his voice completely cracking. "Preston, there has to be a misunderstanding! I'm not completely blind! Why the hell would I fall for that little lunatic?!"
Preston just stared at him.
Kael's mouth twitched. He let out an awkward laugh. "I didn't mean you."
Josslyn's eyes went wide as he turned to look at Preston in absolute shock. "You're into Vivienne?"
Preston kept his expression neutral. "What's this about a proposal?"
Kael looked completely bewildered, his eyes wide and innocent. "Yeah! What the hell is going on?!"
Preston frowned. "You don't know?"
"I..." Kael waved his arms frantically. "If I knew, do you really think I would've just stood there and let those three psychos beat the crap out of me?! Fuck! What is wrong with them? Even if I did go to the Ravenshires to propose, does that really warrant a death sentence?! Why are they trying to destroy me over this?!"
Josslyn thought for a moment. "Honestly, I just put myself in their shoes. If I had a sister, and some guy like you came to propose... I probably would've hit you even harder than Julian did. Looking at it that way, the three of them weren't being completely unreasonable."
Kael ground his teeth and shot him a dirty look. "Are you serious right now?"
