The early October mornings had already begun to carry a crisp chill.
Vivienne Lexton managed to drag herself out of bed early, spending the entire morning teasing her pet turtle and sketching.
At noon, Caspian Ravenshire summoned everyone to the Main Hall for lunch. During the meal, only Aurelia was present; The Three Stooges of Obsidian Estate were nowhere to be seen.
Vivienne chewed on a piece of glazed ham, glancing around the table. "Where is everyone?"
Aurelia lowered her voice. "I heard there's a test tomorrow. Alaric and the others are studying in their rooms."
Vivienne hummed in thought. "A test on what? And they're actually studying for it?"
Aurelia shook her head, sneaking a glance at Caspian. "I don't know, but it definitely isn't a normal test. The winner gets to accompany my grandfather to Solenforth."
A trip to Solenforth? Vivienne looked thoughtful. She distinctly remembered that this wasn't part of the plot in her previous life.
"I'm going to the hospital this afternoon to visit Bianca," Aurelia said. "Do you want to come?"
Vivienne shook her head. Every time she visited, Bianca would drag her into endless conversations. The doctors had already issued a strict ban, insisting that the patient needed rest.
After lunch, Vivienne took Little Stray out to bask in the courtyard's sun. They happened to stroll past the entrance of the Blackbriar Wing. A thought struck her: Cyril still owed her a hundred favors. There was no time like the present to cash in on a little extortion.
*Knock, knock, knock.*
"Cyril!"
After a moment, the courtyard door cracked open just an inch. Lennox peeked out, his expression guarded. "Miss Lexton, is there something you need?"
Vivienne tugged at the turtle's leash. "I'm looking for Cyril. Open the door."
*Slam!*
Lennox shut the door in her face without another word.
"Miss Lexton, you should head back. Mr. Cyril isn't seeing any guests today," his muffled voice came from the other side.
Caught entirely off guard by the rejection, Vivienne stood frozen for a second before she started pounding on the wood again.
Was Cyril backing out of their deal? That was unacceptable. She still had so many questions left unanswered.
