The lotus leaves in the pond were sparse, and the golden sunlight spilling over the decaying foliage added a thick, undeniable layer of autumn melancholy to the air.
Alaric was in his study, practicing calligraphy. His brush strokes were bold, the ink heavy and resolute on the parchment.
"Ugh, how did she not take the bait? Is she completely blind or something?"
Outside, Wesley grumbled to himself. He casually picked up a flat stone and skipped it across the pond. The thin rock bounced over the water's surface, then *smack!* It slammed right into the study's floor-to-ceiling window. With a sharp *crack*, the pristine glass fractured, a massive spiderweb of cracks blooming right from the center.
How could one person cause such a catastrophic mess so effortlessly?
Wesley winced, a sheepish look plastering his face as he bolted onto the balcony. "Boss, didn't scare you, did I?"
Alaric dipped his brush back into the inkwell, not even bothering to look up. "What is it?"
Wesley pointed dramatically in the direction of Vellmont Lodge. "It's that ungrateful Miss Lexton."
Alaric's brush paused mid-stroke. He finally lifted his gaze to look out over the pond. "What about her?"
"I was spying from the doorway," Wesley said. "First, Lennox locked her out. Then Heath completely ignored her. I figured it was the perfect time to swoop in and steal her attention, right? So I opened the door and invited her over to Wolfram Manor. And you know what she did? She gave me an attitude!"
"Steal her attention?"
"Yeah." Wesley pulled off his sunglasses. "The other two guys next door are giving her the cold shoulder. If we step up and show her some hospitality now, won't that bring us closer to her?"
Alaric set his brush down, his expression completely flat. "And who told you to do that?"
Wesley waved his hands dismissively, acting like a humble hero. "No one. I definitely wasn't doing it for you. And I definitely wasn't getting anxious because you don't know how to express yourself. I was just bored, that's all."
Alaric remained silent, looking down at the character on the table.
-[Tranquility]-
It was one stroke short of being finished, but the momentum was broken. There was no way to salvage the flow now.
Noticing Alaric's silence, Wesley craned his neck to get a look at the paper. "Tran? Tran-quil? What's that supposed to mean?"
Alaric's eyes shifted slightly as he picked up the brush and dipped it into the ink again. "Wesley, the cost of that broken window is coming out of your paycheck this month. Do you have a problem with that?"
