"A taxi," Vivienne corrected. "Don't forget to reimburse me for the fare."
Mina rolled her eyes behind her sunglasses. "Fine. I'm rich now anyway."
Vivienne muttered under her breath, "You won't be in a few minutes."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing. Where do we pick up the report?"
Mina hauled her into the main lobby. "Just follow me."
The two of them took the elevator straight to the Crown Hospital DNA Diagnostics Center.
"Hi, I'm here to pick up a report."
The receptionist handed over a registration form. Mina took it and immediately shoved it into Vivienne's hands.
"Hello, please verify the information," the receptionist said politely.
Vivienne glanced at the paper, silently signed her name, and within moments, the receptionist handed over the sealed envelope.
Mina tried to look unfazed. "You open it. I already know what it says anyway."
Vivienne hesitated. Losing her patience, Mina snatched the envelope back, tore it open, and yanked out the documents. "Read it carefully. Let's see if you ever try to—"
She suddenly froze. All the words died in her throat.
The Cumulative Probability of Paternity (RCP) read: 99.999999999%.
In that split second, the abyss swallowed her entire reality.
Mina's fingers began to tremble. She slowly turned to look at Vivienne. "What does this mean? Did they make a mistake?"
Vivienne stayed silent.
Reality seemed to crash down on Mina. She shoved the crumpled papers into Vivienne's chest and bolted out of the department, bursting into tears.
Vivienne let out a soft sigh. She neatly folded the documents away, then turned and chased after her.
Vivienne leaned against the wall, brushing some dust off the steps, and watched the sun dip below the horizon. "So, are you thinking clearly now?"
"Hic—" Mina let out a loud burp and ripped off her sunglasses.
After crying all afternoon, her eyes were severely swollen. Her gaze was unfocused from the alcohol, yet strangely clear in its realization.
"I thought about so much on the way here. My grandfather, my brother, my mom, my dad..." She kept chugging the vodka between words, a fresh stream of tears spilling down her cheeks. "But the part that hurts the most is... this was all a carefully orchestrated lie."
Mina wasn't stupid. Every single thing that woman had done proved she knew the truth all along. More than the devastating loss of her elite status, what gutted her the most was the realization that she had been purposefully swapped at birth.
How was she supposed to face the Blackthorne family now? Her grandfather? Her dad? Her mom?
The alcohol numbed her body, but her mind had never been sharper. For the first time in her sixteen years of life, she felt brutally, painfully awake.
Mina let out an agonized wail and threw her arms around Vivienne, sobbing uncontrollably. "What do I do? No one in the world loves me anymore."
Vivienne looked away, gently patting the girl's head. "Then you'll just have to love yourself a little harder."
