[Doing this is meaningless. This world's plot has already been set. Even if you sell your wedding shoes, they won't change their opinion of you.]
A ping sounded.
Just as the voice in her head faded, another trending news alert popped up on her phone.
#[SHOCKER] From Love to Hate?! Mrs. Ravenshire's Suspected Burner Account Sells Wedding Shoes in a Desperate Last-Ditch Effort.
Vivienne was speechless.
[See? Your character archetype is locked in. No matter what you do, you can't change the situation. No one will know your true intentions.]
"It doesn't matter," Vivienne said, unfazed. "As long as I know." With that, she prepared to turn off her phone.
Just then, the screen lit up with an incoming call.
The contact name read: Honey.
Vivienne's finger froze. The weariness in her eyes solidified. This was the first time Alaric had called her since his grandfather's death. After a moment's hesitation, she answered.
She didn't speak. The other end was silent, too.
Still so distant and cold. Vivienne found it dull and spoke in a lazy drawl, "Alaric, say something."
The person on the other end seemed surprised for a second before a deep, cold voice came through. "Delete the account. And stop stirring up trouble for a while."
"Stirring up trouble?" Vivienne raised an eyebrow. "Me going to the doctor is stirring up trouble? Then what do you call getting a hotel room with another woman? Are you trying to start a hurricane?"
The man paused again, clearly not expecting such a sharp retort. After a moment, his tone grew slightly impatient. "Vivienne, drop your pathetic little stunts. You should be very clear about what we are to each other. If it weren't for Grandfather's sake…"
Vivienne couldn't be bothered to argue. "Sorry, Mr. Ravenshire, but I'm a psycho now! I can't control myself! So I can't stop my little stunts at all." The ‘Narrative Spirit’ had just told her her archetype was set in stone. No one could change it.
Alaric was silent again. A long while later, he said coldly, "It seems your mind really has gone."
Instead of getting angry, Vivienne laughed, her tone softening considerably. "That's right! Alaric, not only is my mind gone, but I can't control my actions either. So don't boss me around. I won't listen anyway, understand?"
Alaric's voice turned colder. "So this is about making excuses for what happened to Bianca? Vivienne, Grandfather has been gone for three years. How much longer do you think I'll tolerate you? You'd better behave yourself, or else…"
At the mention of the elder Mr. Ravenshire, Vivienne's cheerful expression instantly froze, and her tone dropped to absolute zero. "Alaric, I told you, don't boss me around."
Vivienne turned off her phone and pillowed her arms behind her head. If effort was useless, she might as all just give up and let everything rot. The constant fighting and scheming didn't suit a beauty like her.
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, a light flickered in her consciousness. A book entwined with green vines appeared once more in her mind's eye. The book was thick, emitting a faint green glow. The vines had just begun to sprout tender, tiny leaves.
[Vivienne, you are a character in this book. You only have value if you fulfill the mission assigned to you by the story.]
Vivienne kept her eyes closed, trying to rest. "Why do you keep repeating the same nonsense? Don't you systems ever get an update?"
[Correction: I am not a 'System.' I am a Narrative Spirit that guides characters back to their archetypes.]
Vivienne's eyes remained shut. "Oh, shut up. 'Back to their archetypes?' That's a nice way of putting it. Have you forgotten what my archetypes are? Malicious, foolish, selfish, and cowardly. Who encourages people to be evil these days? You're not a Narrative Spirit; you're an evil spirit."
That level of insult didn't faze the Narrative Spirit in the slightest. It continued its guidance.
[Haven't you noticed your physical condition getting worse over the past three years? If a character in a book does not serve the plot, they cease to have a reason to exist. You will soon be erased by the rules.]
Vivienne shrugged, completely indifferent. "Excellent! I've wanted to die for a while now. Getting wiped from existence sounds perfect."
