Three years ago, Vivienne had a sudden awakening. For a fictional character to gain self-awareness was a disaster for the already-established plot of the Narrative Realm.
Once a character had a will of its own, it refused to follow the script. And if the script couldn't be followed, the world of the story was in constant danger of collapse.
To prevent this, the Narrative Spirit was forced to intervene directly.
At first, its methods were harsh, directly erasing Vivienne’s memories and consciousness, treating her like a puppet. But as it happened more and more, Vivienne developed a resistance to it. She would often wake up midway through, leaving the plot in limbo. The time the Narrative Spirit could control Vivienne grew shorter and shorter.
Take the last plot point, for example.
Bianca showing up to confront Vivienne was supposed to be a crucial scene for developing the male and female leads.
According to the original book's plot, during their argument, Bianca would reveal she had evidence of Vivienne colluding with the second branch of the family to poison elder Mr. Ravenshire. To protect herself, Vivienne was supposed to try and silence Bianca, not only injuring her with a vase but also pushing her off a second-floor terrace. This would have left Bianca in a vegetative state.
That event was meant to thoroughly infuriate Alaric, prompting him to demand a divorce despite elder Mr. Ravenshire's dying wish. Once free, the male and female leads could finally interact openly, sparking a tense, romantic chemistry.
But Vivienne had managed to screw up such a critical turning point!
At the time, the Narrative Spirit had only managed to control her long enough to smash the vase over Bianca's head. The moment Bianca fainted, Vivienne broke free from its control and immediately had the driver rush her to the hospital. Because she received prompt medical attention, Bianca only ended up with a few stitches on the back of her head.
With elder Mr. Ravenshire's protection as her ace in the hole, a squabble of this level wasn't enough to make Alaric demand a divorce. Without divorce papers, the development of the main couple's relationship would be criticized, and their characterizations wouldn't hold up.
More importantly, the changes in the plot had spawned numerous subplots, such as Isolde getting flamed on social media—something that never existed in the original story.
That's why the Narrative Spirit was so desperate to set things right and get everything back on track.
Vivienne closed her eyes, preparing to rest and sleep, when the cold, electronic voice sounded in her mind again.
[You've always wanted to know the truth about the night Caspian passed away, haven't you? If you are willing to continue serving the plot, I can make an exception and let you review what happened that night.]
The Narrative Spirit could perceive every character's inner thoughts. Just now, when Vivienne was speaking with Alaric, she had been completely lethargic. But when Alaric mentioned the old master, her reaction was entirely different.
It was as if ripples had appeared on the stagnant waters of her heart.
As expected, Vivienne took the bait. She slowly lifted her gaze. "Didn't you say past events can't be revisited?"
[I can't, but you can. The book is in your mind. You can open it with your consciousness and find the chapter you want to see.]
The past could not be revisited, and the future could not be changed. These were the rules of the Narrative Realm. But to fix the bug that was Vivienne, the Narrative Spirit was willing to take a risk.
Vivienne looked skeptical. "It's that simple?"
[Of course not. This book is the rules of the Narrative Realm. Once your consciousness connects to the rules, your character tags will be reinforced, and the self-awareness you have now will be erased. You will revert to the original Vivienne. In other words, the you that exists now will completely disappear.]
It was incredibly difficult for a fictional character to awaken to self-awareness. In a way, she had already gained a life of her own. Would this villainess really be willing to destroy herself for a truth that could no longer be changed?
The Narrative Spirit wasn't sure.
Vivienne pondered for a moment, then nodded. "Fine."
Damn it, she really was a vicious villain, deceiving even the rules themselves!
[Vivienne, stop! Once the pages are torn, the order of the Narrative Realm will collapse, and everyone will die!]
A tearing sound—
Its only response was the crisp sound of pages being ripped, one after another, each louder than the last. Soon, the boundless sea of consciousness was filled with floating scraps of paper glowing with a green light.
"Narrative Spirit…"
Then, a certain someone's innocent, laughing voice echoed in the mindscape. "What I want isn't to go back to the past, but to change it. Since the rules don't allow it, I'll just have to rip up this stupid book~~ Sorry about this, but let's all go down together~"
[Beep—]
[Consciousness erasure failed. Character tags detached. The system is generating a new story for you.]
[Beep—]
[Generation complete.]
[Prologue starting— Chaos Girl Rewrites the Script?!]
The Narrative Spirit was dumbfounded.
