"..."
Preston pushed his tongue against the inside of his cheek, letting out a dark, incredulous laugh. Had he really just been threatened by that absolute idiot?

Inside the car, Vivienne sat with her arms crossed, her face dark as she refused to say a word.
Julian glanced over at her countless times. Finally, unable to take the silence, he had no choice but to explain everything from the beginning. "I swear I had no idea you were in that car. I just came back from the Cavanaugh Estate and hadn't even checked the group chat yet."
Vivienne retorted, "That's still no excuse. You just rammed into him. Do you realize how dangerous that was? You could have crashed too. If you died, Grandpa would have to bury his own grandson. You aren't a kid anymore, can you stop being so impulsive?"
Julian froze, then beamed with delight. "You actually care about me? Why didn't you just say so?"
Vivienne scoffed. "I'm worried about Grandpa."
"Fine, fine. Let's say you're just worried about Grandpa."
Julian's lips curled into a smile. He usually wasn't this impulsive, but tonight he had this inexplicable, twisted fire burning in his chest and hadn't known how to vent it. Preston had just been unlucky enough to get in the way.
As they spoke, the phone resting on the center console suddenly buzzed.
Vivienne glanced at the screen. Grandma.
The matriarch of the Cavanaugh family?
Without even looking, Julian reached over and flipped the phone face down.
Vivienne was curious. "That's Grandma Cavanaugh, right? Why aren't you answering?"
Julian kept his eyes on the road. "It's not safe to drive and talk on the phone."
Vivienne nodded quietly, guessing they must have had a fight.
How fresh. Julian had an exceptionally close relationship with the Cavanaugh matriarch. He visited the Cavanaugh Estate regularly, and sometimes, when the old woman missed him too much, he would even stay for a few days. She wasn't like Leander Ravenshire—why was Julian giving her the cold shoulder?
Julian cast a quick glance at Vivienne before looking back at the road. "What's going on between you and Preston?"
Vivienne brushed it off. "What do you mean? We just bumped into each other on the road."
