Vivienne rested her chin on her hand, listening closely through the earpiece.
Even as a detached observer, hearing Rowena's shameless demands sent a chill down her spine. She could only imagine how Mina felt.
When Mina didn't reply, Rowena continued, "I'm not going to be a burden on you. It's just... I lost a little money at the tables recently, and I need you to help me out. The Blackthornes spoil you rotten. A small favor like this shouldn't be hard for you, right?"
Mina scoffed coldly. "You just want money?"
Of course she didn't.
Money was just the entry point to create a permanent tether. Today it was cash; tomorrow it might be a confidential document from Edmund Blackthorne's study.
But Rowena wasn't going to admit that. She offered a placating smile. "Exactly. Sounds like a good deal, doesn't it?"
Mina shook her head. "And what if I refuse?"
Rowena's smile widened into a smirk. "Then I'm sorry to say your little luxury cruise is over. I'm sure Mrs. Blackthorne would love to know where her real daughter is. Sadly, things haven't been easy for me these past few years. That poor kid has suffered a lot with me. She had to drop out of school to work at a young age. But she's much more filial than you are. When she found out about my debts, she actually went out and sold herself on the streets to pay them off."
Mina froze in pure shock. She had been sheltered her whole life; a nightmare like that was utterly incomprehensible to her.
Vivienne glanced up, her finger tracing the rim of her coffee cup.
This woman was lying.
But why? Was she just trying to terrify Mina? Or was she accidentally revealing her own twisted endgame?
Rowena had spent years surviving in the gutters. Manipulating a sheltered brat who had never faced the real world was child's play to her. Remembering that she had a mission to complete for Rizzo, she casually raised the stakes.
