Vivienne simply shrugged. "I'll just wander around. If worst comes to worst, I can always go back to the parlor and play a few hands of poker with the ladies."
"Pfft." Mina knew she was just joking around, but she couldn't help laughing anyway.

The two parted ways.
Vivienne headed downstairs. She was just looking for a spot to kill time when she overheard Sylvia complaining to Clarissa.
"Clarissa, I swear, what kind of awful karma do I have? To give birth to such an ungrateful, rebellious daughter! I haven't even dared to tell her father about this yet, because with his temper, it would be an absolute disaster."
Sylvia was clearly furious with Sophia, already venting her frustrations before they were even out of earshot.
Clarissa looked exasperated. "Keep your voice down. What will people think if they hear you? And you can't blame this entirely on Sophia. You really need to sit down and actually talk with her."
Sylvia's eyes welled up as she practically wailed. "How am I supposed to talk to her? After all these years, she's still holding a grudge over one drunken comment her father made, and she refuses to come home. Now that she's older, she's even more out of control! She even dared to do something like this behind our backs. What on earth is she going to do next?! Tell me, why doesn't that child have a shred of consideration for her parents?"
Clarissa felt a headache coming on the second she heard Sylvia's theatrical weeping. "Enough. Don't speak of this again. If you don't know how to handle the situation, go ask the patriarch. Whether she can go or not ultimately comes down to a single word from him."
Realizing she had a point, Sylvia wiped her tears away and aggressively hurled the manila folder in her hands into a nearby trash can.

"That is absolutely outrageous! How could they treat you like that!"
After hearing what Sophia had been put through over the last few days, Mina was practically vibrating with rage. Without a second thought, she marched toward the door, fully ready to charge out there and demand answers for her best friend.
But the second her hand closed over the doorknob, her brain completely short-circuited. It felt as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her head, chilling her right to the bone.
She couldn't. She was currently a fake heiress. If her true identity was exposed down the line, the Everhart family would crush her like an insect.
