Stormhollow, The Blackthorne Residence.
Eleonora sobbed uncontrollably as she held Mina in her arms. "Mina, my sweet girl, you're finally back."
Sterling looked on with immense relief, wrapping an arm around his wife's shoulders. "See? I told you. The kid just went out to play for a couple of days, and she came right back once she had her fill. But no, you just wouldn't believe me. Hurry up and wipe your tears, you don't want to scare her."
Crying in front of her child made Eleonora feel a bit embarrassed. She turned her head, wiped her tears, and then pulled Mina in to check her up and down.
"Mina, next time you go anywhere, you have to let us know. Do you have any idea how worried we were?"
"I understand," Mina replied. She turned to look at Edmund. "Grandpa, I'm sorry. I'm back."
Edmund waved a hand. "It's good that you're back. There's no need for apologies between family."
Isolde stood outside the circle, quietly watching them exchange greetings.
Noticing Isolde's strange demeanor, Edmund smiled and smoothed things over. "Alright, let's all sit down. Our family can finally have a reunion dinner today."
The smile on Mina's face faded significantly as she nodded and took her seat.
Since stepping into the Blackthorne home, she hadn't looked at Isolde once. Isolde also understood Mina's stance and hadn't said a single word from beginning to end.
Sterling, perceptive as always, took the initiative to scoop a spoonful of the most tender Fish Maw for Mina. "Mina, eat up."
"Thank you," Mina said softly.
Sterling then turned to Isolde. "Isolde, Dad has already sorted things out with the school. Starting next week, you'll transfer to Elite Class 1."
Isolde nodded. "Thank you, Dad."
That "thank you" brought a warm sting to Sterling's eyes. If he had only protected his daughter better, these things would have been Isolde's from the start.
As Mina chewed the fish in her bowl, she suddenly felt an intense craving for the hot pot in Merriton City.
After dinner, Edmund kept Mina in the Tea Room to chat.
The grandfather and granddaughter sat across from each other. Edmund placed a few tangerines on a metal rack over a fire to roast. Before long, the room was filled with the sweet, citrusy aroma.
Seeing that they were ready, he used tongs to peel away the softened tangerine skin, picking out the bright orange segments and placing them on a small plate to hand to Mina.
"Back at the hospital, I asked you if you were willing to forgive Isolde. Do you have an answer now?"
Mina took the porcelain plate with both hands and nodded. "I have an answer."
Edmund looked up at her.
Mina spoke without hesitation. "Grandpa, I don't want to forgive her. Even if I know it makes things difficult for you, Mom, and Dad, I refuse to compromise this time."
Edmund nodded. "You're right. This is a difficult situation for the adults, and Grandpa shouldn't have forced it on you. It's Grandpa's fault for asking you that question. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been so disappointed that you ran away from the hospital."
Mina was taken aback. "You aren't mad at me, Grandpa?"
"She is my friend. I have to ask her first. It only happens if she agrees."
"Alright, alright." Edmund chuckled and shook his head. Suddenly remembering something, his expression grew serious again. "There's one more thing Grandpa needs to ask your opinion on. It's... about Rowena."
Mina's eyes shifted subtly.
"She wants to see you," Edmund said.
From the very first day Rowena fell into the Blackthornes' hands, she had been screaming to see her biological daughter, even going so far as to threaten that if the Blackthornes dared to do anything to her, Mina would seek revenge for her in the future.
Edmund originally didn't want to involve Mina, but the children had grown up. He couldn't hide it from them forever.
"What does Mom think?" Mina asked.
Calling Eleonora "Mom" made Mina's stance clear, and Edmund felt deeply relieved. "Your mother hates what Rowena did, but she can clearly separate the two of you. You are you, and she is she."
Mina's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I am an abandoned child. I don't have a biological mother, only an adoptive one."
Edmund nodded. With that single sentence from Mina, his mind was at ease.
Suddenly, Mina thought of something. "But before everything else, I still want to see her."
