Obsidian Estate.
"Honoria Gresham?"
Dorian stared at Talia, feeling a massive migraine coming on. "Do you even know who Judge Gresham is? She was the one who handed down the sentences in The Hanging Case that shocked the world! You want her presiding over this trial? Are you trying to send Vivienne straight to the gallows, or are you trying to drag the entire Ravenshire family into the fire?"
Years ago, a group of noble heirs had relentlessly bullied a classmate, ultimately torturing him to death in an unimaginably brutal manner. Because the perpetrators were minors, they had evaded any real punishment.
The victim's family refused to back down and appealed the case. During the second trial, Judge Gresham took the bench. In the courtroom, the murderers, arrogant in their wealth and status, laughed and taunted the grieving family without a shred of remorse. Defying massive political pressure, Judge Gresham sentenced all eight noble minors to hang.
Prior to that verdict, the Athelvia elite had never suffered a legal defeat. The public revered The Hanging Case as a revolutionary triumph for judicial justice.
Naturally, Judge Gresham made powerful enemies. She was subsequently framed for bribery and moral misconduct, leading to a suspension pending investigation. Fortunately, the heavens favored the righteous. Despite deploying every resource at their disposal, the elites couldn't fabricate a shred of evidence against her. Instead, the investigation unearthed her heartbreaking past.
Judge Gresham was a single mother who had lived entirely for her daughter. She had sacrificed everything to provide the girl with the best resources and enrolled her in the finest academy.
One day, she received a call from the school stating that her daughter had suffered a fatal heart attack. By the time a devastated Judge Gresham arrived at the campus, the school claimed the body had already been sent to a crematorium.
It was the ultimate, unimaginable nightmare for any mother.
Half a year later, Judge Gresham emerged from her grief and began investigating her daughter's death. Fueled by a burning hatred for the wicked, she resolved to become the ultimate arbiter of justice.
She returned to law school and joined Stormhollow's First Court with the highest scores in the nation.
Dorian frowned deeply. "You're naive enough to believe this case can still be tried fairly?"
He couldn't fathom why Talia was losing her mind at such a critical juncture.
"Why can't it?" Talia sneered. "Vivienne is my daughter. Since my father isn't here, I call the shots regarding her life."
Dorian's face darkened furiously. Talia was the youngest sibling, and heavily favored by their father. She had never given an ounce of respect to the second branch of the family.
Lucian quickly grabbed Talia's arm. "Dorian, Talia actually has a point. Judge Gresham's standing in Athelvia is unshakable. If she declares Vivienne not guilty, it will instantly crush the majority of the negative press."
