Leander Ravenshire frowned, utterly baffled by the accusation. "What do you mean, stirring up trouble? I am your father, I—"
His only answer was a retreating figure, colder than a frozen winter pond.

Northwing Court, the Tea Room.
The lighting was a warm tangerine, the scent of sandalwood hanging heavy in the quiet air.
Caspian Ravenshire handed a purple sandalwood box across the table. "Open it."
Alaric Ravenshire took the box with both hands. Undoing the silver clasp, he found a beautifully crafted, semi-automatic pistol resting on the velvet lining.
He stared at it, stunned, before lifting his gaze to Caspian. "Is this... your silver pistol?"
Caspian nodded. "I've already submitted the paperwork. It is officially yours now."
Alaric looked down, his fingertips tracing the smooth metal barrel.
"I know how much you looked forward to inheriting your father's glory," Caspian said softly. "I gave the original serial number to Vivienne. Do you have any regrets?"
Alaric shook his head, meeting the older man's eyes without hesitation. "No regrets."
For someone inherently aloof and emotionally guarded, those two words were a massive concession. Warmth bloomed in Caspian's chest. He rubbed the corner of his eye. "Good. As long as you don't regret it. This is your reward, Alaric. You did very well this time."
Alaric snapped the wooden box shut, his eyes reflecting the warm orange glow of the room. "Thank you, Grandpa."
Wesley Crain was waiting outside Northwing Court. Seeing Alaric emerge, he rushed forward. "How did it go? Did the Patriarch find out? He didn't punish you, did he?"
Clutching the wooden box, Alaric didn't even spare him a glance, striding right past him.
As he navigated the inner courtyard corridors and passed Vellmont Lodge, Alaric couldn't resist casting a glance toward Whitestone Lodge. The lights behind the glass windows were still on.
