Chaos Girl Rewrites the Script novel Chapter 70

Blackbriar Wing.

The television screen was frozen on a close-up of Ethan's impassioned face. Cyril lay on the rocking chair by the window with his eyes closed, a cynical, cold smile on his lips. The hypocrisy of politicians was more grating than the buzz of summer cicadas.

A buzzing sound came from the coffee table. It was his phone vibrating. Cyril glanced at it—that same unknown number again.

He answered the call without any hurry.

"Dad."

"What happened? Why didn't it work?" Dorian was asking about the failure of the allergy attack last night.

Cyril thought for a moment. That girl's motives were strange. He had always been cautious, so he didn't plan on telling Dorian anything until he had figured things out.

"I don't know, but I assure you I followed your instructions."

Dorian's tone was calm. "Cyril, don't lie. You should understand your position."

Cyril's eyes held a cold smile, but his tone was exceptionally docile. "Dad, you should know very well whether I'm lying or not. Did Victor not explain the situation clearly to you?"

Last night, Victor had specifically made him a bowl of fish porridge. At that moment, Cyril had guessed he was Dorian's man.

His father, having been suppressed by the old master his entire life, had a severely twisted psyche. Besides, this wasn't the first time Dorian had planted a spy by his side, so Cyril was used to it.

Dorian fell silent. Cyril was right. He had indeed confirmed things with Victor beforehand. It was precisely because Victor hadn't noticed anything amiss that Dorian was only probing out of habit. If he had any real evidence, it wouldn't have been just a simple phone call.

The elder Mr. Whitmore, with a pipe in his mouth, deftly rolled a string of onyx worry beads between his fingers, his brow furrowed in thought.

Damien, however, lacked his father's composure. He alternated between standing and sitting, pacing anxiously like an ant on a hot pan.

"Dad, wasn't this supposed to be foolproof? What do we do now? The investigation into Ethan is such a huge deal, it has to be the Ravenshire family's work."

The elder Mr. Whitmore's eyelids flickered, his sunken eyes hiding a dark, inscrutable glint. "I heard that a few days ago, a cargo ship had already left the Merriton City docks and entered international waters, only to be inexplicably sunk."

"Dad? What do you mean by that?" Damien didn't get it right away. To him, the two incidents were completely unrelated.

The elder Mr. Whitmore slowly blew out a ring of smoke, his demeanor calm and composed. "Think about it. Who else at Stormhollow Deepwater Port has that much power? Who would dare to open fire in international waters without any evidence of a crime?"
