Damien immediately understood. “You mean the Ravenshire family?”
Elder Mr. Whitmore sighed and fiddled with his pipe. “It seems we can’t touch the Ravenshire lion for now. We’ve lost this round. Go to the Obsidian Estate tomorrow and bring your wife and child back.”
“What?” Damien was stunned. “Dad, this is just the beginning. Ethan is only being accused; they don’t have any evidence. Isn’t it too soon to be making this decision?”
Elder Mr. Whitmore frowned, frustrated with his son's incompetence. “If you put half the effort you use for chasing women into something productive, I wouldn’t still be slaving away at my age! Use that thick skull of yours and think! Who is Caspian?! For him to dare make a move in international waters, there must have been something wrong with that ship. Ethan visited me a few months ago and gave me a priceless antique. Do you have any idea where those things come from?”
Damien was too afraid to speak.
The elder Mr. Whitmore continued, “Those treasures are worth a fortune, and they’re all ill-gotten! That ship was loaded with the dirty money Ethan got from bribes. He sold the Gold Hill property to Solenforth for military development but told the public it was for military aid. Now that the ship has been sunk and seized, do you really think Caspian doesn’t have evidence?”
Damien felt a jolt of fear, nearly collapsing from the shock. “Then… then what do we do? Dad, we took favors from Ethan, and you were the one who handled the Gold Hill deal. If Ethan falls, won’t the Whitmore family be dragged down with him? How is the old man of the Ravenshire family so powerful? We planned this for so long, and he figured it all out in an instant.”
Damien didn’t dare to argue, looking utterly spineless. “Dad, I know I was wrong. What should we do now?”
Frederick Whitmore gritted his teeth. “What should we do? I don’t care if you have to beg or plead, you will bring Talia back tomorrow. As long as Talia and Bianca are with the Whitmore family, we still have something to bargain with the Ravenshires.”
