The news of Jade Cavanaugh's disappearance sent a wave of panic through the crowd. Everyone gathered in the hotel lobby, desperate to evacuate.
Just as they were ready to leave, the rolling thunder peaked, and the heavens tore open. A torrential downpour descended, a sheer curtain of water hammering the courtyard and mercilessly thrashing the remaining pear blossoms into the dirt.
A suffocating silence filled the lobby, the deafening roar of the storm only amplifying their terror.
Manager Hughes hung up the phone and rushed into the crowd, bowing deeply in apology.
"The recent lightning strike took out the nearby cell tower. I'm afraid it won't be repaired until the storm passes tomorrow. The weather is too severe, and with the surrounding lakes and hills, the water levels will rise dangerously within half an hour. It's simply too risky to drive out now. I must ask everyone to wait until tomorrow."
"Wait until when?" a girl shrieked. "There are kidnappers in this hotel! Are we supposed to just sit here and wait to be taken?"
"I don't care, I'm leaving right now. Nobody is stopping me!"
"Exactly! We're leaving!"
These girls were the pampered daughters of elite families. A kidnapping was beyond their worst nightmares, and reason had completely abandoned them.
Seeing the situation spiraling, Lana Bellamy tried to soothe the crowd. "Everyone, please don't panic. We don't even know who these kidnappers are or how many there are. Let's not lose our heads. With this abnormal weather, driving would be far more—"
"Shut up!" A girl close to Sienna Markell shoved Lana hard. "Your family owns this hotel! You have the nerve to tell us to calm down after this happened?"
"Exactly. You're refusing to let us leave. Are you in on it with the kidnappers?"
The Cavanaugh family had organized this gathering, but with Jade taken, everyone seamlessly shifted their fury onto Lana.
Knowing her status wasn't enough to quell the mob, Lana bit her lip and looked at Isolde Blackthorne, silently pleading for backup.
Isolde hesitated, then chose silence.
After the tragedy with Mira Easton, her entire perspective on friendship had shattered. She only formed alliances based on mutual benefit now. Genuine trust was a relic of the past.
