"Boss," a voice cut through the chatter.
Wesley Crain strode into the crowd wearing a black windbreaker, dripping wet. His gaze was as lethal as an unsheathed blade.
"The signal wasn't knocked out by lightning. Someone intentionally severed it."
The girls went pale, trembling uncontrollably.
Manager Hughes looked utterly bewildered. "How is that possible?"
"Keep going," Alaric said, his expression completely unfazed, as if he had anticipated this all along.
Wesley continued, "The rain is too heavy. The surrounding hills have been overdeveloped, making the foundation unstable. The risk of mudslides is extremely high, and the lake water has already breached the road. Heading back to Stormhollow Deepwater Port right now is a death sentence."
Alaric glanced at Manager Hughes. It seemed the manager hadn't lied about the weather.
"What do we do then? The kidnappers cut the signal to stop us from calling the police!"
"The communications room couldn't have been compromised so easily. It has to be an inside job!"
The crowd descended into sheer panic, their voices layering in chaotic terror.
"Hey, hey!" Kael Kenyon stood up, gesturing for silence. "Complaining isn't going to fix anything. Right now, our priority should be figuring out how to survive the night safely. No one knows who the kidnapper's next target will be."
His words sent the room's temperature plummeting. A few of the more timid girls burst into tears.
Spreading fear at a time like this? Was he out of his mind?
Vivienne eyed Kael with open disdain. As she shifted her gaze, she locked eyes with Preston.
Preston offered a faint, condescending smile. He expected Vivienne to roll her eyes and ignore him, just like always. But to his surprise, she met his gaze with a fierce, predatory stare. It was captivating, like a hook plunging straight into the darkest malice of his heart.
