"Are you saying he knew there were armed thugs on the grounds and actively helped them?"
"Yes, I suspect..."
Vivienne's eyes locked onto his. "Preston is working with them?"
Alaric didn't deny it.
"Wait, that means... the whole 'power outage' trick was a show you put on for Preston. You wanted him to believe you hadn't caught onto the real intruders?"
A spy within a spy. A trap within a trap.
Vivienne turned the details over in her mind, and suddenly, the image of Cyril effortlessly taking down the kidnappers flashed in her head. The final piece clicked into place. She stared at Alaric with a strange expression. "You guys are in on it together!"
"We?" Alaric met her gaze evenly.
Vivienne pressed, "Cyril and Julian knew your plan from the very beginning, didn't they? What are they doing right now?"
Alaric hadn't expected her to connect the dots so quickly. After a brief pause, he answered slowly, "The Everhart family's influence runs deep in Athelvia's government. If Preston is truly colluding with armed criminals, we need irrefutable proof to convict him."
"I sent everyone away and had Julian go 'warn' Preston to make the real intruders believe we had completely lowered our guard. As for Cyril, with his skill set, hunting down the real threats in a resort this size shouldn't be too difficult for him."
During their military academy survival exam, fifty students were dropped onto a mountain for an arctic evasion simulation. Not only had Cyril evaded the instructors, but he systematically hunted down the other forty-nine students, eliminating the entire field.
That was exactly why Alaric had entrusted the hunt to him.
So that was it.
