Meanwhile, by The Covered Bridge.
A man crouching in the shadows wiped the rain from his face. "Boss, the rain is too heavy! We can't land a shot!"
"If you're trash, just admit it! Stop making excuses!"
The man called "Boss" hoisted his sniper rifle and aimed into the torrential rain at Julian.
Bang!
The shot tore through the curtain of rain but missed its mark completely, shattering a stone pillar miles off target.
...
"Damn it! What kind of garbage gun is this?!" He pulled his balaclava down, his eyes glowing with vicious intent. "What are you idiots looking at? Chase him! If we let that fat sheep get away, we'll have worked this whole year for nothing!"
"Yes, Boss!"
His subordinates didn't dare argue. Pulling their masks down in unison, they cocked their weapons and charged toward The Covered Bridge.
Julian glanced over his shoulder, his expression calm as he pushed himself to sprint faster.
"After him!"
The base of the bridge was solid stone, topped by a long wooden pavilion with an open, sweeping slate-grey roof.
Bullets cut through the downpour, firing wildly. To terrify Julian, the raiders shot continuously as they ran.
Julian hardly spared a thought for the danger trailing him. Everything was going exactly according to plan.
He had deliberately gone to warn Preston specifically to draw these raiders out. According to the plan, Cyril should have already flipped Preston's lackeys and was now lying in ambush beneath the stone archway on the other side. As long as Julian successfully lured them there, The Raiders would be fish in a barrel.
Their strategy was tightly interlocked, leaving zero room for error. The main event tonight wasn't these mercenaries—it was unmasking The Mole inside the Ravenshire family.
They had to sweep Preston and The Raiders off the battlefield as fast as possible. If this turned into a three-way shootout, their current manpower stood absolutely no chance.
"Boss, he's getting off the bridge!"
"Don't let him get away!"
The pursuit was vicious. Bullets ricocheted wildly, and a stray piece of shrapnel grazed Julian's cheek. Instantly, his heart jumped into his throat.
But standing on the edge of life and death left no room for fear. Julian faltered for only a second before fueling his sprint toward the bottom of the bridge, driven by an unshakeable will to succeed.
Finally, tearing through a hail of bullets and blinding rain, he reached the designated ambush spot.
"Cyril!"
Julian roared the name as their signal.
