She made a move to step out again.
Cyril squeezed his eyes shut and grabbed her wrist, a lump forming in his throat. "I believe you."
He was brilliant. From the very first time Vivienne had urged him to go back, he had realized someone had orchestrated The Schism Ploy.
But they were already trapped in it. There was no turning back.
Just like right now. Even knowing it was a trap, he had planned to just roll with it. He couldn't risk going back for Julian, only to find him missing. What would he do then? Deep down, he simply didn't trust that Julian and Alaric would keep their promises, especially if it meant abandoning Vivienne.
He had already made his choice. But Vivienne's complete disregard for logic forced his hand, leaving him no option but to trust her.
Vivienne waved the blade of grass in her hand. "Cyril, let's break this plot together. Try it my way. Maybe the rain will stop soon."
Cyril offered a low hum. He reached out and gathered her damp, loose hair, his fingers expertly hooking a small bear hair tie from her wrist to secure it into a messy ponytail. Before she could react, his face returning to a stoic calm, he took the blade of grass from her hand.
"Don't break your promise."

Over a mile away, up in The Observation Tower.
"Damn it! I missed again! Who the hell is this chick?!" the hidden sniper cursed, wiping a raindrop from the scope of his rifle. "I've been chasing her all night and firing blanks. If word gets out, my reputation in the underworld is toast."
Stellan Shaw scanned the shoreline through his binoculars. "She was standing perfectly still just now. Weren't you supposed to be a guaranteed hit within a two-mile radius?"
The comment only fueled the man's rage. He aimed his rifle at the lake bank just as a frog hopped onto the shore due to the rising water. He pulled the trigger, and the frog was obliterated mid-air.
"See that? My aim is perfect. It's the girl who's cursed. Forget it. Can't we just kill someone else?"
Stellan replied coldly, "The Boss specifically ordered a hit on her. If you switch targets, who's going to pay you?"
