Crash!
A bullet shattered the wooden lattice window and pulverized a glass lamp inside, the echoing sound of breaking glass filling the quiet room.
Alaric looked down at the black box in his hand, his obsidian eyes empty of any warmth.
He never should have trusted them.
It was as if he was transported back to that night twelve years ago. He had woken from a nightmare, only to find his supposedly kind uncles and aunts plotting to commit him to a psychiatric ward under the guise of "caring for his well-being."
They all claimed he was devoid of emotion. But the truth was, he felt everything too deeply. Watching his blood relatives scheme and manipulate like ghouls disgusted him so profoundly that he had willingly severed all emotional ties.
Sequestered at St. Helorian Chapel for seven years, he had grown entirely accustomed to a life of apathy. Yet, when he finally returned home, he had walked right into the most devastating rainstorm of his life.
In that storm, he witnessed an emotion vastly different from the artificial grief at the funerals. He suddenly remembered the hopes his parents had carried for him—that he would live his life like the sun, radiant and proud.
That rainstorm had cracked the ice around his heart, leaving behind a trace of warmth.
Men were not made of stone. How could he remain completely unfeeling?
Spending every day together for the past five years, even though they had initially been at each other's throats, they had always respected an unspoken boundary. It was that very boundary that had convinced him to trust them tonight.
But tonight's storm felt very different from the one five years ago.
Alaric's finger brushed against the detonator button, then stopped as a thought crossed his mind.
"Give them five more minutes."
"Fine," Wesley agreed quickly. He gave Alaric a sidelong glance. Five minutes, then another five minutes... when did it end?
Capitalizing on Alaric's distraction, Wesley's eyes hardened. He launched himself forward, tackled Alaric to the floor, and cleanly snatched the black box.
Alaric's expression shifted, his voice turning deadly serious. "Wesley, what do you think you're doing?!"
Wesley clutched the box tightly, rolling into a corner to hide. "If you refuse to do anything that might damage the Ravenshire family, then I'll be the villain."
"There's more to what's happening tonight than meets the eye," Alaric insisted. "Just wait."
Wesley rolled his eyes, his true colors finally showing. "More than meets the eye? You idiot! We've obviously been played. Forget five minutes; give it another hundred minutes and Cyril still won't show up. If they do show up, I'll eat shit. A whole pound of it!"
