The Ancestral Hall was brightly lit. Alaric, Cyril, and Julian knelt perfectly straight, their upper bodies bare save for the thick white bandages wrapped tightly around their torsos.
Creak—
The heavy wooden doors with intricate floral carvings swung open behind them. A warm summer breeze drifted in, causing the red candle flames to flicker gently.
Hearing the noise, the three of them turned their heads.
Cedric and Jasper carried in a large, antique wooden armchair. They set it down at the front of the hall, placed an indigo cushion woven with gold thread on the seat, and quietly exited without a word. A moment later, Caspian walked slowly in, carrying a small mahogany box, and seated himself in the chair.
Their expressions shifted slightly, and they turned to face Caspian in unison.
Outside the hall, Cedric took hold of the brass rings and slowly pulled the heavy doors shut.
Click—
The sound of a lock tumbling into place echoed through the room.
Caspian's expression remained neutral as he unfastened the brass lock on the mahogany box. He pulled out a thick stack of documents, his voice cold and heavy.
"This is proof that Dorian and Leander bribed a hospital to falsely diagnose Alaric with a mental illness."
All three blanched instantly. Alaric, usually unshakable, stared with wide, stunned eyes.
Caspian continued, "This is proof that Leander and the Montclair family bribed officials in Gold Hill to illegally sell off national territory."
"This is proof that the third branch smuggled narcotics alongside the Whitmore family."
"This is proof that Dorian colluded with Congress members to misappropriate military supplies."
"This is evidence that Dorian hired assassins to kill Alaric."
