"Understood," Lennox muttered, his shoulders slumped in defeat as he slowly walked out of the room.

Meanwhile, Wesley had delivered the letter and returned to Wolfram Manor.
Alaric was sitting on a chaise lounge by the lotus pond, tossing fish food into the water. Hearing footsteps, he glanced up, saw Wesley was completely empty-handed, and immediately looked back down at the water.
Wesley cautiously approached. "Boss, the letter has been delivered."
"Mm," Alaric responded, completely deadpan.
Wesley mentally rolled his eyes and cleared his throat. "Um, Vivienne had a message for you."
Alaric's hand paused. "What... did she say?"
"She said she received your sentiments and the gift. She forgives you."
Alaric blinked in surprise. "She actually said that?"
Of course she didn't. Wesley hadn't even made it past the front door to see her. But if he told the truth, his emotionally stunted boss would spiral into a foul mood, and Wesley would be the one suffering the consequences.
Channeling his inner Vivienne, Wesley spun the lie with practiced ease. "Absolutely. She also said that she was never actually mad at you. She was only furious with Julian and Cyril. She knows you were trapped in a difficult situation, so she doesn't hold it against you."
That should stroke his ego enough, right?
"She isn't mad at me?" Alaric thought about it for a second, but his mood inexplicably darkened. "Why is she only mad at Cyril and Julian? She feels nothing toward me at all?"
Wesley stared at him, utterly speechless.
