The Bayside Residence.
Victoria paced back and forth across the living room barefoot, her hair a messy tangle. Over the last two years, her temper had grown increasingly volatile, and the worry lines between her brows had deepened.
"Where is Dorian? Why isn't he here yet?"
The maids were long accustomed to her manic episodes and hid quietly in the kitchen.
Victoria glared at the marble clock on the wall, her eyes burning with growing fury. "Did you even tell Dorian?! Answer me!"
Ding-dong—
Just as she was on the verge of exploding, the doorbell rang.
The rage in Victoria's eyes instantly transformed into joy. She practically sprinted to the door. "Dor—"
She yanked the door open, only to be met with the face she wanted to tear to shreds.
Her eyes widened in horror and fury, her chest heaving violently. "Why are you here?! Why you?! Where is Dorian?"
Moira hadn't seen Victoria in a very long time. For a moment, it was hard to reconcile the crazed woman before her with the former First Lady she used to be.
She hesitated briefly before explaining, "Mrs. Ravenshire, Mr. Ravenshire is tied up right now. He sent Mr. Cyril to check on you."
"Mr. Cyril?" Victoria scoffed, delivering a vicious slap across Moira's face. "What did you just call him? He's a nameless bastard! Does he deserve to be called a Ravenshire?"
Lennox frowned, stepping forward to intervene, but Cyril raised a hand to stop him. He smiled and walked up to Victoria. "It's been a while, Mrs. Ravenshire."
Only Victoria understood the provocation hidden in that greeting.
She suddenly went dead calm, her eyes turning utterly numb. "What are you doing here?"
"Just checking in," Cyril replied smoothly. "And to catch up on how you've been."
Victoria stared at him intensely. After a long silence, she turned and walked back inside. Cyril smiled and followed her. By now, the maids who had been hiding in the kitchen tentatively peeked out.
Cyril glanced back at Moira. Understanding the silent cue, she stepped forward, ushered the maids out, and cleared the room.
Victoria crossed the living room, casually snapped open a cigarette case, and lit a cigarette.
She crossed her legs, the slit of her nightgown falling back to reveal her thigh. The way she tilted her head back to exhale a plume of smoke was both decadent and elegant.
"What? Afraid I'll expose your identity as a bastard, so you couldn't wait to come silence me?"
Her demeanor was a stark contrast to her earlier manic state.
Cyril didn't look surprised in the slightest. His expression remained mild. "You are still the Lady of the Ravenshire household. Thanks to the copper mines in Uzia, the Montclair family's situation has improved over the past few years. I... don't quite have the nerve to touch a Ravenshire right under their noses."
