Rowan turned deathly pale, his palms instantly slick with sweat.
"The Premier Black Card?" Kael suddenly realized the gravity of the situation. He glanced at Preston. Seeing the icy shift in Preston's eyes, Kael snapped his head toward Rowan. "Those two hicks had a Privilege Card?"
In Athelvia, only a microscopic fraction of the elite could even qualify for such a card. Because Kael's business operated in the shadows, Preston had established a strict rule before opening the doors: The Celestial Tier, The Terrestrial Tier, and the lower-tier casinos were absolutely forbidden from accepting guests carrying a Privilege Card.
Gregory and Sheila clearly lacked power and status. By protocol, the moment they presented a Privilege Card, the casino should have gone on high alert and reported it. Instead, Rowan had covered it up and authorized a massive transaction. He hadn't just broken a rule; he had shattered the foundation of their security.
Vivienne clicked her tongue and shook her head. "Tsk, tsk, Kael. Does your casino not do background checks? You just let anyone waltz in?"
Kael's face cycled through shades of sickly green and white.
"Boss, greed blinded me!" Rowan slapped himself hard across the face, realizing his deception was laid bare. "I saw those two hicks and thought they were clueless, so I... I'm sorry! I was wrong!"
He threw himself into another round of self-flagellation. "I didn't know it would be this serious! I owe a massive gambling debt, and I thought the commission from this one swipe would save me... I..."
Vivienne nodded along thoughtfully, then turned to Preston. "Maybe he really didn't know. After all, those two initially went to your lower-tier establishment, didn't they? Why don't we bring the floor manager from there and ask him? If there's no bad blood, why would anyone bother setting up a trap for two nobodies?"
Rowan's eyes darkened with terror, the hair on his arms standing on end.
Preston's expression was utterly unreadable. "Bring those two back in."
A moment later, the enforcers dragged a half-dead Gregory back into the private room. Sheila followed, trembling uncontrollably, her eyes wide with trauma.
