"That Cyril is insufferable! He was trying to drown me!"
Vivienne emerged from the bathroom, muttering curses. When she reached the sunroom, she saw that Cyril was already gone. Caspian was sitting in front of the chessboard, deep in thought, while Cedric was clearing away the tea set.
She paused, then walked over and looked around. "Grandfather, where's Cyril? Did he go to the bathroom too?"
Caspian pulled back from his thoughts and looked at her with amusement. "The game's over. Cyril went home."
"It's over?" Vivienne was incredulous. It had only been five minutes since she left. How could Cyril be that fast?
"Who won?" That was what she cared about most.
Caspian turned his head to look at the board in front of him. "He won."
Vivienne was even more stunned. She ran over for a closer look. A double-check mate. Checkmate. It was a dead end.
Caspian looked at her astonished expression. "I should thank you, actually. You're the reason I lasted this long."
Vivienne was instantly speechless.
She wasn't actually a twelve-year-old. If Cyril had the ability to end the game in five minutes, it meant he had been toying with her for the entire past hour.
No wonder he kept feeding her water. He was getting revenge on her. That jerk, he was still so devious!
Cedric, who was clearing the tea set and preparing to leave, suddenly thought of something and looked at Vivienne. "Miss, would you care for more tea?"
Vivienne felt the urge again. Her face expressionless, she clutched her bloated stomach and dashed back to the bathroom.
Caspian watched in amusement, shaking his head as he turned his attention back to the chessboard.
In those final five minutes, he had been truly stunned by Cyril. The calm decisiveness in his every move... if this were a battlefield, half the kingdom would be his.
Caspian leaned on his cane and slowly settled into his rocking chair.
Blackbriar Wing.
Every morning, Cyril would go to Obsidian Estate and usually wouldn't return until noon. Sometimes, if the old man asked him to stay for lunch, he might not get back until the afternoon. But today, he had intentionally returned an hour early.
When he got back to his room, he found the door unlocked. Cyril acted as if he hadn't noticed and pushed the door open.
In his suite, the study and bedroom were separate rooms, connected by a walk-in entryway.
As Cyril passed through the entryway and stepped into the study, Victor immediately straightened up and turned around. "Mr. Cyril, why are you back so early today?"
Cyril glanced indifferently at the books in Victor's hands. "The game ended, so I came back."
Victor quickly stacked the books neatly. "I saw things were a bit of a mess, so I thought I'd tidy up."
Cyril nodded. "Then carry on." He walked over to the nearby sofa and started looking at his phone.
