Chapter 115
Daria’s POV

I was not sure how long I had sat there, curled up into a ball and crying my heart out. But eventually my tears dried up and my sobs turned to wheezing as my breath seemed to be knocked right out of me.
It was the sound of footsteps that made me look up. And for the first time I noticed how much darker the forest looked. It must be evening now, I thought in passing as I locked eyes with Eric.
His eyes were blank, but it wasn’t hard to practically see the relief coming off him in waves.
“Are you alright?” His voice was cool, calm but I could detect an undercurrent of edge in them. It was anger, aimed not at me but at Caleb, I knew.
“I… I don’t know,” My voice broke. I wanted to tell him how I felt but the words weren’t enough? How else could I tell Eric that I was wrong? That he was right to warn me to not trust Caleb?
How else could I express how betrayed I felt? How else was I supposed to move on from this?
“You don’t have to say anything,” He sat beside me, crouching low. He winced briefly as he braced his arms to position himself and I was reminded of his still recovering shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” I said honestly. “For making you come out here. You don’t have to.”
“It’s not you that should be sorry, Daria. So don’t say that.” His voice was firm, correcting without chastising, comforting without being overly cloying.
I exhaled, slowly.
He was right, but it didn’t make things any less difficult. I had to do something now. And that something was stepping back, letting Caleb have his happy ending with Felicia.
She was pregnant, I recalled the way she stroked her baby bump. A pang shot through me like lightning. I had never missed my lost child like I did now.
Eric didn’t say anything; he didn’t need to say anything as far as was concerned. That he was here was enough.
I leaned against him, his tall sturdy form. Placing my head on his shoulder I closed my eyes, listening to the sounds of life around me.
This too will pass, I thought, not with certainty, but with no small amount of hope.
Eric escorted me to the front of Jacob’s home.
“Are you sure you want to stay here?” He asked with a small frown. “We can share my bedroom. Killian’s not around, so I need the company anyway.”
“Eric, I’m fine,” I smiled wanly. I didn’t want to worry him too much. I feel like a burden now more than ever. “And Sabrina is here. I can stay with her… At least until I can clear my head properly.”
He gave me a long, searching look. Seeing that I had no hesitation in my gaze he sighed loudly and then nodded.
“Fine,” He agreed, albeit a little grudgingly. “I will give you space to think properly about what you want. But if you need anything-”

I cut him off gently, “I will come find you. I know, Eric. Please go and have some rest.”

He turned and left. I waited until he had walked far enough before I turned to knock on the door. But suddenly the door opened in a rush, and my fist lingered in midair with shock crossing my features.
It was Sabrina. The look of relief on her face was palpable.
“You’re back,” Her face brightened, but then she swallowed heavily. I could see the pain in her eyes, pain that was because of me. I suddenly felt like the worst friend in the entire world. I had worried her, worried everyone. I had been a terrible friend.
“I… I don’t know where else to go,” I whispered. “Brina, I-”
She pulled me into a warm hug, shushing me. Her hand caressed my back comfortingly.
“You don’t have to say anything anymore,” She said in a soothing tone. Then she led me through the front door. I shivered, holding back the tears that had just sprung up in my eyes.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I could still feel a buzz. Like someone was trying to reach me. But this time I didn’t bother to let that person through.
Not now.
Sabrina had a maid draw a bath for me. It was warm, reminding me of better times. As I left the bathroom wearing a plush pink robe, I saw Sabrina sitting at the edge of the bed, dressed elegantly in pajamas.
“I’ll stay with you through the night,” she said. And somehow that was what I needed.
A knock on the door came, and a maid walked in holding a tray meaty aroma arose, stirring up my hunger. But despite that I had little appetite left. I ended up picking at the meal, which was admittedly tasty.
