It was much later in the afternoon, that Sabrina’s stomach growled loudly that I was pulled out of my thoughts. As if on cue, my stomach rumbled too, and I laughed a little.

“We need to get some food,” I stood, yawning lightly as I stretched my hand at her. “Come, I’m sure we can find something in the market to eat.”

As we walked, the sunlight beat down on us, and I enjoyed the warmth that filled my body, as though washing away all the hurt that both of us had cried out last night and this morning. Sabrina sighed, and relaxed just like I had.

But in an instant our peace was once more disrupted by the sounds of a loud, familiar voice.

I looked at the path before us and saw that Felicia was ordering her guards and maids. Two guards flanked her, carrying bags laden with what looked like fabric, dresses and shoes. A maid closer to Felicia struggled with the weight of a wooden box.

“You! Don’t dare let that drop, or you will be facing punishment, do you hear me?!”

Sabrina gasped at the sight and I could sense my friend’s anger bubbling slowly. The maid that Felicia had scolded so openly steadied herself, and I could see the poor girl holding back tears, her face flushed and biting her lips.

My heart hurt for the maid, for anyone that would be affected by her reign as Luna of the Wisteria pack. But this time I couldn’t do anything. It wasn’t my place, and would never be again.

“Come,” I gestured to Sabrina, eager to avoid Felicia and all her antics. Already my heart was heavy, and I was not in the mood for anything else.

But it seems that fate was not on my side today, because instantly her eyes fell on me, and I saw a hint of glee in those hate- filled, malicious eyes of hers.

“You,” she grinned, and took a step toward me without hesitation I inhaled sharply, and Sabrina tensed beside me.

“What the ever loving hell,” my best friend muttered under my breath.

“Lady Felicia,” I greeted with barely a hint of politeness in my tone. Yet I kept my face blank and expressionless that would fool anyone. Just having to address her made me grit my teeth with rage and pain, but I wasn’t going to show it.

“Did you think you would be forever in his heart?” Felicia sneered. “You’re nothing but a wasted woman. I have given him a child, but you have never. You tried, didn’t you? But that womb of yours could never work well.”

I was silent. Her words hit me where it hurt, a dagger piercing the already wounded spot deep within my chest.

“Did you know the Alpha had so many heirlooms and luxuries?” She sounded snarky. “Even with how long you’ve tried to stick by his side, he never let you wear them, did he? But he gave them all to me.”

“Is that so?” i asked blandly, but she didn’t seem to notice the lack of interest in my voice or body language.

“Look,” she flipped her hair, one hand still cradling her baby bump like it was the most precious thing in the world.

The sunlight hit the emerald gem inlaid on the gold pendant, exposing the kaleidoscope of colours reflecting on the clear gem. She sported matching earrings to go with them. Anyone would be envious of that display of wealth and luxury. Most people didn’t even get to afford such items.

“Jealous?” she asked, still toying with the necklace.

“Whatever you say, Felicia,” I said calmly and quietly. “But I don care.”

“Whatever I say?” Felicia threw her head back and laughed. “You decided to finally give up, huh?”

“Oh shut up!” Sabrina couldn’t hold back anymore and snapped Do you even dare to speak in front of everyone?”

“Does she?” Felicia shot back but then she paled considerably, as Sabrina took a step toward her, jaw clenched and hand outstretched.

“Brina, just leave it.” I tugged at her hand. “It isn’t worth it. Besides, it-“I cut myself off.

What I had wanted to say was. ‘It doesn’t matter because she’s already won.

But my throat felt instantly dried and my stomach roiled uncomfortably at the thought of conceding. I had lost my composure already back at the party. I couldn’t do so now.

Steeling myself. I walked away and pulled Sabrina away with me.

What I didn’t expect was to hear a loud shriek and flow of curses behind us. Felicia, for some reason, had taken it as a true insult to her dignity that I wasn’t going to give her the time of day.

“Daria. I. Sabrina was about to speak but I shook my head.

“Don’t worry, Brina. It’s really okay,” I said with a sigh.

We stayed out until the sun was setting, as if trying to delay the inevitable. Sabrina didn’t once talk about Jacob, and I. I forced myself to not think about Caleb.

Sabrina and I snuck back into Jacob’s home, like thieves in the middle of the night.

Once we were safely ensconced in the bedroom, Sabrina began to pack her things. She only selected three pairs of clothing, ignoring the jewelry, and all the finery of the room. I busied myself lighting candles before sitting at the edge of the bed deep in thought.

The knock on the door made the two of us pause.

Cautiously, I stood and opened it, while Sabrina quietly hid the bag she had packed.

It turned out to not be Jacob as I had expected, but a maid who stood there.

“Madam.” The maid bowed to Sabrina. “Elder Gerome wishes for you to join him for dinner.”

“I” Sabrina pursed her lips, and I knew she was about to refuse

“Brina, it’s fine. Just go,” I turned to her. She paused, her lips pressing tightly before nodding. She followed the maid out but not without giving me a reassuring look.

I knew it was because of the events of this morning. Whatever it was, I didn’t have the fear of being abandoned, but Sabrina had come to love being a part of this family. She deserved- they ALL deserved to get a farewell.

To my surprise the maid then turned to me and handed me a letter.
