Chase Me Alpha (Daria and Caleb) novel Chapter 119

Chapter 119

Daria’s POV

“Are you ready?”

Sabrina nodded, hoisting the bag over her shoulder with ease. She wore a dark blue top, jeans and a dark coat, her hair tied up into a neat bun.

It was barely dawn; we had chosen to set out early to head off anything or anyone that might stop us.

The spot that we had to meet Eric would take us several hours to get there even if we didn’t stop to rest.

I glanced at my best friend, and her look of determination. She had not told me what had happened the night before, and had simply slipped into the room at midnight, silent and contemplative.

I nearly stopped her and asked her if she really wanted to do this Unlike myself, who now had little ties to the Wisteria Pack, it was true that Jacob had made a mistake, but he still loved her. And Sabrina had long been accepted as his mate by even his family. What ripples this action of hers would cause… I wasn’t sure I wanted her to face it.

Holding myself back, I swallowed the words back down and followed her, stealthily walking outside. I was nearly startled by a few sounds in the quiet mansion, but neither of our steps faltered. Sbarina took the lead this time, taking me through the hidden back entrance of the house. As we stepped out into the open air, a light breeze made both of us shiver in unison.

“How far is the place?” Sabrina asked while we walked down a beaten path towards the edge of the forest.

“At least a couple of miles,” I murmured. We kept our voices low one mistake right now could risk our exit getting found out, and it could cause more chaos.

I bit my bottom lip, my mind wandering to the one person I wished I could stop thinking about.

Despite the betrayal, it was impossible to stop my feelings for him. Even down to last night, though I had made my decision, I wanted to reach out to him through the mind-link. I wanted him by my side. But I knew that Caleb wouldn’t respond. I had cut off the last ties of emotion with him. And he would surely hate me now.

I inhaled sharply against the biting irritation in my eyes, caused entirely by my tears.

I had gotten used to the pack this time. It felt less like fleeing disaster and pain, and more like… leaving a home I couldn’t bear to part from.

The darkness gave way to faint hints of blue in the sky, followed by a golden light that warmed the horizon. Sounds of the animals in the forest waking filled the air – the rustle of wings, trill of hummingbirds, the feeling of life all around.

Sabrina and I sped up our pace, keeping it consistent. We hadn’t stocked up on anything to eat, but paused at some point to pluck some wild berries from trees to eat. I munched on a few, walking as I popped each one into my mouth and crushed them between my teeth. The tangy, yet sweet juice caused sparks of recognition in my tongue, and then disappeared into a faint memory, over and over again.

We walked, passing by tall trees and several clearings.

The northern border gate was one of the furthest to go to, and I was certain Eric had picked that spot specifically for that reason. Because by the time anyone figured out we were gone, it would already be too late, and we would be on our way to the Crimson Pack.

Thinking of meeting up with my cousin once again and Master Killian, and settling into the pack that they called home was enough to brighten my mood. I began to hum a small jaunty tune, one which Sabrina immediately picked up and joined me in.

The sun was high in the sky by the time we neared the meeting place. As we did I began to look around, anticipation building up gradually.

“He should be closeby,” I said to Sabrina who nodded eagerly.

But in that instant everything changed.

Several growls filled the air and suddenly, every side of us was blocked, our path gone.

Sabrina gasped loudly, freezing momentarily as I pulled her close. I looked around in alarm, adrenaline pulsing in my body as the realization slowly showed.

Rogues.

“How..?”I whispered to myself. Has this been a trap?

I turned to Sabrina, “Run!”

Then I changed at one of the rogues, attacking with my elongated claws.

The rogue was swiftly taken down with one blow, and I turned to the other beside him. They all jumped at me, and I knew that I was cornered. I only hoped, prayed, that Sabrina would be able to escape.

He nodded, hair falling over his eyes as he peered at me. Somewhere in this dungeon I could hear the faint drip, drip drip of water echoing.

“Where are we?” I looked around again, still trying to figure everything out.

“The Red Vale Pack.”

He delivered that line like it didn’t matter, but distinctly, the sharp feeling of a weight settling into the pit of my stomach occurred. I swallowed, processing his words.

My father had done this, hadn’t he?

“I went out on a lead from one of Killian’s informants,” Eric explained to me carefully, shifting as he leaned forward to grasp the bars. His chains gave a clink, shaking with each movement he made. “The informant was dead when I got there. His eyes were gouged out, and his tongue cut out. He was barely alive when I found him. I tried to send a word to you, but…” he fell silent, as though unable to say any more.

I saw the guilt in his eyes clear as day.

It was Sabrina who spoke before I could, “It wasn’t your fault, Eric. You couldn’t have done anything.” she looked around her and shivered. “D-Does this mean that Alpha Kingston is here?”

“Worse,” Eric replied but before anything more could be said there was a sudden loud bang. We all fell silent, and for a second, my heart skipped, with dread forcing me to remain still and keep my eyes fixed on the darkness.

Then footsteps, loud and heavy, echoed in the dungeon.

“Ah,” The sound of a liltingly soft yet masculine voice filled the air. “You are finally awake. My guest of honor, ever the mysterious woman.”

There was detectable glee and darkness in that voice. I looked up to see a man I was sure I had never met before. But there was something about him. His aura was different from anyone else. His eyes gleamed gold, his skin pale and cold. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought he was carved from marble. But he moved. Two men flanked his sides, giving him an aura of importance.

I didn’t need to guess who this was.

It was clear in my eyes..

“Jamal,” My voice was low, but he was sure to have heard my name come from his lips. And slowly, I saw the smirk that tilted the corner of his lips upward.
