“I’m fine,” I said to the unasked question, and gently pulled my and away from his to tuck my hair behind my ears. I refrained from holding his hand again and instead kept my hand inside my pocket while we walked.
It was a few minutes past midnight and the entire mansion was rily quiet.
“You don’t have to pretend. It’s fine,” Raul spoke. “Whatever hap ened today wasn’t your fault. I know you’d blame yourself for how things went. But you didn’t call those wolves to attack you.”
His reassurance was barely registering in my head as I glanced a the maid cleaning the portrait so late at night. My brows furrowed and I hummed.
“It’s just… I didn’t expect to be the cause of drama again in the pack,” I removed my eyes from the maid and looked at Raul
He sighed heavily.
“So you and Caleb…?” He asked them. Right to the point. “You two have a history.”
“You could call it that,” I replied lightly, even though the topic was anything but lighthearted to me. “He was my mate. And he didn’t want me. There’s nothing else worth saying than that.”
“I see. I heard Alpha Caleb had been married before, but I didn’t connect the dots then to you.”
I was silent, and so was he for a time.
I wondered what he was thinking now. Did he not like the fact that I’d been married before?
As quickly as I thought that, my cheeks started to warm, and I looked away from him. Come on, Daria, I told myself. Raul is nothing but a friend, right?
But somehow a traitorous voice sounding almost mocking arose in my head. ‘Keep telling yourself that, Daria. Tell yourself that Raul doesn’t want you, and you don’t like the man he’s become. Liar.’
I tried to keep those thoughts to myself and quash them. But every so often they arose while Raul walked me to my room like a gentleman.
This time he didn’t speak to me until we reached my door. His silence was slightly unnerving, and I refrained from giving into the urge to ask him if everything was okay. I knew he wasn’t pleased by Caleb being my mate. But it was all in the past. and it didn’t matter to me anymore.
Then the images of Caleb falling to the ground in the forest after being hit with a tranquilizer surfaced, and I couldn’t help but remember how terrified I’d been then. The way I’d screamed his name like it was my last breath.
My hands clenched unconsciously.
That was nothing. Just a reflex.
“Goodnight,” Raul told me as soon as we reached my door. Despite his previous silence towards me, his voice was warm and comforting. I nodded at him, entirely grateful and wishing I could tell him everything.
Immediately I got into the bedroom, I took off my clothes and nd a cold shower. My movements were slow and gave off the air of exhaustion I felt deep inside.
The second I hit the bed, I drifted off to sleep.
Memories turned to dreams, twisted into scenarios that mixed in my head. I dreamt of leaving the Wisteria Pack the same way I had done.
The night was cold and dark, and I stepped into the forest suddenly hearing my name being called by a familiar voice. Night turned to day as I recognized the voice. The warmth envelopede.

Turning around, I smiled as he approached me. His gaze was fix on mine and the sun casting a golden glow over the sky. and through the trees.
But as he moved closer his face began to morph. My confusion rned to terror as he shifted into a wolf that charged at me. I turned to run. But it was too late-
Abruptly, I pushed myself up and choked out gasps spilled from my lips. My vision blurred briefly but focused as the sudden knock on the door made my pounding heart skip a beat
“W-wha?”
I shot to my feet as the knocking persisted and grabbed my satin robe to put it on before opening the door.
It was a maid with urgency in her eyes.
“What is it?”
Barely had I gotten the question out before I heard a loud voice hrough the hallway.
“Daria!”
Caleb.
I rushed out without thinking. My feet were bare and padded across the hallway. My breaths came out in pants while I ran to the source of the sound, stopping at Elder Gerome’s door and nearly running into a wall.
An arm stopped me and I looked up to see Caleb’s concerned gate.
“What happened?”
It turned out to be a lot. A lot had happened in the few hours I had been asleep.
When I entered the Elder’s room, he was asleep.
At least that’s what I thought at first until I noticed his breathing was erratic. My ears picked up the faint pulse and I rushed to his side, shocked.
Jacob stood by his side looking disheveled and pale. Giving me space, he moved backwards.
“But he was fine this morning,” I let out, checking his vital signs with trembling hands.
“A maid alerted me to his condition. Daria something must have happened. You have to make sure he’s fine-”
I cut Caleb off before he could say anymore with an icy glare.
“I know that, Alpha Caleb.” Then I turned to one of the two maids standing and began to give orders. “I need a bowl of warm water and a rag. Quickly.”
The maid bowed and ran out. The other one stood, and I glance at her briefly before turning to Caleb.
“You can stay but I need everyone else out, including Jacob.”
