Chapter 18

Caleb’s POV

I barely had time to relax as the day began.

By the time I’d finished my morning exercises and stretches to live a hot scalding shower, it was already seven am and time for breakfast to be served.

Dressing up in tailored slacks and a black Henley designer shirt left the bedroom suite and noticed Raul some ways down. the hallway. He was deep in conversation with the Green Pack Ba.

That far off most werewolves wouldn’t be able to hear the words spoken between the two of them in such low volumes. But I wasn’t just any werewolf.

Since I had been a little pup I’d trained my body and mind to conquer my limitations and reach far beyond what mostt werewolves could do. It was a fact that earned me the title of Alpha of Wisteria Pack at a young age.

My ears pricked upon hearing the Wisteria Pack leave the other man’s lips.

“… don’t think that Alpha Caleb would refuse to help. But you’re fight,” Beta Chris of the Green pack murmured thoughtfully. “We have to make sure our packs are protected by his warriors. Our packs need enough supplies.”

“Just make sure to follow my lead Beta Chris. This plan will not il. And alpha Caleb wouldn’t simply stand by and refuse if you do as I ask,” Raul’s words ignited a fire of fury within me. I seethed underneath the stoic face I kept outwardly.

He was truly the most manipulative bastard I had ever seen.Exhaling softly I thought about what I’d heard.

The two men hadn’t yet noticed me and I took the opportunity approach them while clearing my throat.

The two of them suddenly froze and turned around. Immediately I noticed an expression of polite respect on Raul’s face while the other Beta fumbled with his lips parting and shutting ke a fish.

I ignored that entirely and greeted the two men.

“Beta Raul. Beta Chris.” Tilting my head I feigned ignorance. “What has you both up so early?”

“Breakfast of course,” Raul took the lead, replying quickly without any hint of ill intent.

“Well, I chuckled. “Since you’re both headed the same way I am we might as well head to the dining hall together.”

I gestured in front of me and the two men followed my lead. While we walked I noticed the two of them exchange glances. Then as if it was planned Beta Chris spoke.

“Alpha Caleb I was hoping we could discuss the rogue situation around the region now.”

I refrained from smirking. Whatever else he was going to say I had no idea because I cut him off instantly.

“Beta Chris you are aware of the concessions my pack has made ince this situation with the rogues began last year. It has been quite some time and yet the Green and Dartmouth pack sl demand the full strength of our resources. Just like last time, I don’t intend on giving your packs resources without addressing the needs of my people first.” I finished.

Silence reigned while we passed by a group of maids carrying baskets full of laundry. They bowed to us and waited as we passed before going on their way.

Meanwhile I was halfway out of patience with the demands of the Dartmouth and Green Packs. If it were my pack in trouble they wouldn’t even lift a damn finger to help.

I restrained my anger and didn’t give a hint of my knowledge on what they were planning. If they thought I was easy to manipulate then I was happy to give them the damn shock of their lives.

“I see, Alpha Caleb,” Raul made a point of humming in his lighthearted manner as though we were discussing the weather. “Then what about this? We can write an iou to the pack and to you. Whatever resources we take in excess will be returned within a year after the rogues have been defeated. In fact if we don’t pay back, Alpha Caleb, then you can make your demands to us in return as interest.”

I stilled.

On the surface this seemed like a considerably good plan that would benefit us all.

But there was a catch. There had to be. I didn’t trust the words of beta Raul who had proven himself to be, in my eyes, resourceful and yet came off absolutely innocent.

No one could ever become Beta of a pack such as Dartmouth park by just being nice and pleasant to all he meets.

I knew somehow that underneath all his nice mask and facade of humorous character lay a dark and dangerous character.

Just then we reached the dining hall and my eyes wandered over to none other than Daria. She sat in the middle of the large table which was loaded with breakfast foods and pastries. The aroma of the feast awaiting us rose in the air pleasantly.

But I paid no attention as my eyes were caught onto Daria’s as she turned to see us arrive. Then she rose and I watched as she approached us.

She glanced at me briefly but then she looked at Raul. For the first time I saw warmth in her eyes but it wasn’t aimed at me. It was aimed at Raul.

“Alpha Caleb, Beta Chris,” she greeted us pleasantly. But when she spoke Raul’s name there was a softness to it that wasn’t there before. It was far different from the usual polite manner she talked to everyone else. Including me.

“Raul, how are you?”

Raul seemed to sense the tension in the air as I glared openly at the scene before me.

“Doing well. How did you sleep?”

“Not well I’m afraid,” she smiled weakly and for the first time I noticed the dark circles under her eyes. She had been woken up abruptly by the maid sent to call her and likely hadn’t been able to go back to sleep as the sun had risen not long after she was done caring for Elder Gerome.

My heart clenched as I remembered that she had also been the one tending to me at my bedside when I woke up a few minutes past midnight. She had barely gotten any rest herself.

“Daria. You shouldn’t be up so early,” I cut in whatever else Raul was going to say. She turned to look at me with her expression shuttered. “Your maid could have brought you a meal later this morning after you woke up. You don’t have to come down.”

She smiled and this time I could sense she was truly not in a good mood.

“Thank you for your concern Alpha Caleb but my work demand that I am always available at least during the day,” she explained politely.

Yet her gaze spoke something else and I saw it flicker to the sided then back to me meaningfully

I caught the hint instantly.

We had agreed to pretend that all of the discoveries from the nightime emergency didn’t make it out as gossip. Even the maids had been cautioned.

Turning slightly I noticed a maid standing there overseeing the her maids in their task of serving foods to the guests and delegates.

By now Beta Chris had left to take his seat leaving Daria and Rat standing with me.
