Chapter 19

Daria’s POV

It happened in an instant. The maid I had recognized as the one who conversed with the unknown man at Edler Gerome’s door that morning seemed to trip over her feet.

Alpha Caleb and Raul didn’t notice at first. They were too busy exchanging sharp words with each other that made me feel both awkward and frustrated.

Just barely restrained from giving into the urge to roll my eyes. I noticed the maid drop the bowl which looked to be loaded with fruits.

Then chaos began suddenly from the corner and a man began to raise his voice shouting at another guest.

My brows raised and anxiousness flooded my being. All eyes turned to the commotion.

Even Alpha Caleb had stopped his pissing contest with Raul and stared briefly at the argument taking place at the dining table. Then without missing a beat he raised his voice.

“Enough.” his voice left his lips in a low baritone growl that echoed around the entire hall. Unwittingly my hands clenched and a shiver ran down my spine sending tingles all over my body

Stepping towards the enraged man he began to address them in a much calmer voice. It washed over the entire room.

I would have not noticed the movements behind me were it not for the thought of something being off. The strangeness and suddenness of the entire morning filled me with not only confusion but a healthy dose of suspicion.

In the next second my thought was confirmed. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed movement and immediately turned to see the maid slip out of the room

I stiffened, my thoughts whirling. Should I follow? I wanted to. But a part of me that still had common sense knew it would be a bad idea or walk out without having backup

Could I risk the idea of walking into danger unprepared?

“Daria,” Raul’s voice shook me out of my spiraling thoughts and glanced at him to see the concern written clearly in his

eyes.

Guilt filled me.

I hadn’t even thought of Raul for the past couple of hours. Not even since I had attended to Elder Gerome.

“Hey, I’m sorry, I just-

“Daria, come.”

Caleb’s interruption of my words made me still. The dining hall was back to its calm and serene state like the chaos had never happened. He stood by the corner shadowed and unseen.

Caleb’s eyes stared at the both of us standing close to the entrance like he had just seen something terrible.

His eyes bored holes into me and left my chest heating up uncomfortably.

Wincing I abandoned Raul with an apologetic glance and walked over to where Caleb stood. As much as I wanted to ignore Caleb at times he was still the Alpha of the Wisteria Pack which meant his word was more important than my desires.

“What is it, Alpha Caleb?” My voice was full of exhaustion.

He glanced over my shoulder with a stoic glare before meeting my eyes. Then he leaned in as if to embrace me and I nearly jerked back were it not for his words murmured gently.

“Did you notice anything out of place just now?” He asked in a tone so low that no one could hear. “During the chaos.”

I thought of the maid that slipped out of the hall carlier.

“I did. I think this whole thing was staged as a distraction,” I replied. “She’s gone. She left quickly too. I was about to follow her but-”

“Don’t. You’ll put yourself in danger,” Caleb’s words filled an emotion that I didn’t expect.

He was worried.

It couldn’t be. He had never once cared about me and he also hadn’t even shown worry about whether I lived or died when we were married. How could it be that he’d do so now that I wasn’t his Luna?

It was almost like fate was using this to laugh at me. To mock me for being wanted by my mate only when I wasn’t his to control utterly.

Clearing my throat loudly I stepped away from Alpha Caleb and put some distance between us.

But then he grabbed my hand and tugged me closer.

“You think distance will change what’s between us? I know you can feel it…our mate bond, it’s so strong. Daria.” his words infuriated me to no end. But his gaze was heated.

Suddenly the memories of the previous night and how close he was flashed through my head. I pressed my lips thinly together, unable to stop the swell of emotions that made my face flood with heat.

“I don’t feel anything, Caleb “I whispered. I glanced around and saw that no one was staring at us save for two people. The man who had started an argument earlier and Raul.

Raul’s gaze was fixed on mine and we stared at each other for a few seconds before he then turned away to eat his breakfast.

I couldn’t deal with the waves of confusion and guilt and exhaustion for the time being so I looked away too.

Meanwhile the other man still stared at Caleb and I. More so he was fixed on our joined hands.

This man was suspicious enough to warrant my attention. It was clue to him that the maid from before slipped out.

“What are you going to do about him?” I asked without moving. Caleb was silent for a few seconds but then responded.

“I will have some eyes watching Damien just fine. He’s Beta Draco’s cousin. So this puts a lot of things in perspective.”

The Beta’s cousin?

Frowning, I tried to remember details about the Beta of Wisteria Pack. Beta Draco was middle aged and known to be a quiet

man.

How he had become the beta likely had more to do with the fact his family was one of the founding members of the Wisteria Pack than his actual capabilities.

I personally had only met him once before. And at that time I hn’t noticed any strange things about him.

Then again I had been trying to survive as Caleb’s mate and the back Luna then.

But if the man that caused the ruckus was truly the Beta’s cousin then it meant that there was more that had to be uncovered before there could finally be peace.

Upon returning to my bedroom the first thing that I noticed was how clean it was. My brows furrowed and scanned the entire place from my spot at the door.

The maid had done her job well. I mused internally. But had she done more than that?

She was a spy after all. I idly strolled to my bags which were still half packed and laying in the space between the wardrobe and a large floor length mirror for dressing.

Upon lifting the bag I checked the weight and then opened it. Nothing seemed amiss. Until I had moved to drop the bag and inhaled sharply.

Right between the zipper teeth I placed my finger to pick at the ear invisible object. It was a tiny strand of hair. Curly and brown just like the maid had.
