Daria’s POV.

I was very lucky.

Lucky that I had anticipated it.

Raul’s expression was foreign. helooked vastly different from what I had expected. Usually he would face me with a light and charming smile, an expression of warmth but now I knew the truth behind his eyes.

His expression now was cold and dark which almost made me shiver in fear but I continued in the face of the accusations laid before me. “I wasn’t even near my bedroom since dinner. I had been tending to my patient.”

The crowd around looked at me with varying expressions, mostly looked at me with disbelief raw in their eyes.

“You’re lying Daria, you don’t have to be afraid of Alpha Caleb,” Raul strained as he said those words. “You were with me and you should tell the truth.”

How did I not realize it before?

The hidden edge to his voice, the way that each look at me had something dark in them.

The way that he seemed to never blink in his stares fixed on me how that his face was fixed on mine and I knew the truth I couldn’t stand it anymore.

I looked away and turned my gaze to Caleb who had an unreadable gaze in his eyes. I was filled with dread. He didn’t believe the words of Raul did he?

When he spoke it was with deliberation, slow and punctuated. “Do you have any proof to your words Daria?”

I refrained from lashing out at him and inhaled sharply. Clenching my hands into fists I spoke loudly that my voice reached every corner of the room.

“I was with Elder Gerome all night, tending to him. He is still recovering and I have proof,” I faced the crowd and gazed into each and every one of those eyes. “The guards on duty can testify to my presence there.”

Almost at once there was a ripple on the crowds. They began whispering to themselves again, being the target of such speculation never failed to make me antsy. It felt like ants were crawling on my skin and made me more irritated than before.

“Send for the guards,” Caleb said and before long two of the guards on duty through the night were brought forward.

Both of the men sported looks of mild exhaustion, their shoulders were slumped and their hair disheveled. But the strength and resolve they had never waned.

The questioning began.

“What is your current post?” Caleb asked.

The two guards bowed to him before replying.

“Elder Gerome’s bedroom. We are to guard him for the night shit.”

“And you were there last night?”

“Yes alpha, we were on duty until just a few minutes ago.”

Chapter 30.

“So,” Caleb turned tome. “You can tell us the truth, was healer Daria in the room tonight or not?”

I held my breath

Despite knowing that I was innocent it could easily be that it would be twisted and turned against me.

“She was in the room checking on Elder Gerome Alpha. She even slept there.”

“Lies!” Raul’s voice was a guttural roar.

This time Caleb didn’t waste any time, he turned around swiftly to glare at Raul with gleaming furious eyes.

“You should admit defeat now before we charge you for assault of a maid in MY pack and under MY protection Beta Raul,” Caleb growled in a warning tone. “If you think you can lie your way out of this one then you should give up this measly attempt. I’m not a fool.”

“No, but it seems I must have been,” Raul’s tone tirned dangerous and low. Then he screamed. “Daria! You will fucking regret this.”

“I never expected this of you Raul,” my voice trembled. I wasn’t faking it, it was real. Real emotions that ran through me as I mourned the man that I had thought he was, that boy that brought me so much joy in my past.

“You dare threaten my guest under my watch Raul?!” Caleb jumped in, his voice brokered no further arguments. “Send him. to the cells to cook off, we will investigate and determine if he will rot in there or not.”

And just like that, it was over.

The crowd slowly dispersed after Raul was dragged out. His yells and curses hit my cars and made me solemn.

It wasn’t even daytime yet but all thoughts of rest was impossible

“There’s one more thing.” I spoke out loud. Caleb and the head aid looked at me while Mira sniffled pitifully and she was given kind looks by other maids who had moved to cover her. “The matter of dealing with her.”

Mira’s sniffles increased and even the head maid stared at me in horror.

“She was assaulted Healer Daria,” the head maid strode forward to defend her. I pressed my lips together thinly, thinking of

the oast.

When I was Luna this woman was the same one that had not cared to get the servants to listen to my orders. In fact she deliberately went against my orders, making me feel like nothing.

Some other maids glared at me. Mira seemed to sense the sympathy oozing from most of their pores and she looked up at me pitifully.

“Miss,” she choked out. I could hardly keep myself from laughing at her pitiful play. She had learnt it well. “Please spare me.”

“I would if you were innocent but I have proof of your actions Mra. First,” I turned to Caleb who stood still watching me. “I saw this when I returned, it’s a water glass but it has the scent of aphrodisiac. It was laced with it. Whoever planted it there had to have intended for me to drink it. Who knows what might have happened if I hadn’t gone to check on Elder Gerome?”

Handing the glass to Caleb, I let him take a sniff. Immediately nose wrinkled and he leaned back. His grip on the glass tightened and I saw a small crack form on the unblemished glas

“No one else had access to your room except for her,” Caleb muured, his voice low and with an edge. His expression spoke of retribution.

“It’s not true,” Mira cried out and tears spilled down her cheeks, didn’t try to drug her, Ipromise. I swear on my life.”

“Then there’s only one way to find out, proof speaks over words, I cut her off without mercy, glancing at the head maid I asked, “It wouldn’t be a bad idea to search her belongings, now would it?”

She looked hesitant.

I knew she had a soft spot for the younger maids. Even a little word about bullying and she would report it to Alpha Caleb

but this wasn’t one of her innocent little maids.

I looked at Caleb, knowing the head maid wouldn’t bother to listen to me.

He gave the orders instantly.

And so the search began, in less than thirty minutes the guards emerged from the maids quarters bearing a small black bag made of leather, they dropped it before Caleb one of them bowed and spoke, “We have found letters exchanged between the maid and an unknown person, from the contents we can ascertain she is communicating with a rogue group.”
