The next thing I knew, a hand grabbed my arm out of nowhere. I turned around only to see gleaming eyes filled with intense anger that could burn me to the spot.

Shaking off the surprise and trying to appear calm I kept my voice level.

“Elder Talen. I never expected to run into you here like this. What seems to be the matter?” I asked.

Despite every anger and annoyance I held for Felicia and her family I wasn’t so stupid as to show it openly like this. They were one of the most powerful families in the Pack nd thus, held great influence even outside of the pack. If they wanted to make my life difficult they could.

To my surprise it wasn’t Elder Talen that spoke. Instead Felicia stepped out from the periphery and took a step towards me with fury displayed on her face just like it was on her Elders.

“You think you can just return to the pack and worm your way back into Caleb’s arms and into the position of Luna, don’t you?” She seethed. I blinked in shock and she raised her finger to point at me. I jerked back and pulled my arm out of Elder Talen’s grip.

Adrenaline flooded my body and I realized I was surrounded. Flanked on both sides by guards. I knew this was an ambush. But I stayed stoic and kept my chin raised defiantly as I glared at her.

“What type of things run through your mind, Felicia?” I chuckled softly with slight bitterness on my tongue. “I have nothing to do with your precious alpha anymore.”

“Oh?” She tilted her head and sneered. “Even if you say that, do you think I’ll believe such silly drivel? Who are you trying to fool?”

Then Elder Talen spoke after her and my gaze flickered to his. “For the insult of assaulting your better, you will pay

Suddenly I felt hands on my shoulders and I was shoved down in the middle of the street. No one around dared to help me. Instead they all scattered away and disappeared like they never existed.

Of course. I thought bitterly of how easily everyone in the pack overlooked my suffering before. This was no different.

But that didn’t mean I was going to surrender. No. I would make sure she felt the heat of my hatred against her. For myself and my lost child.

“You raised your hand against a maid for no reason. So I showed you what it’s like to be insulted and degraded. What?”L tilted my head and let a mocking smile play across my lips. “You didn’t think I was going to be afraid because of a little threat from you? I’ve faced far worse than your pretty head can ever imagine. If you wish to punish me then fine. I don’t care. As long as this ends here and no other person gets hurt.”

They were briefly shocked into silence before Felicia let out a low growl and grabbed one of the guards whip.

It cracked in the air threateningly and I felt the sting on my check before I even saw it coming. The force made me turn my head. The smell of the leather whip and the burning sensation of my cheek was maddening I torced myself to grit my teeth even though my eyes prickled with tears unwittingly

Turning my head back to glare at her gleeful expression I smirk agam She was holding the whip so tightly, her eyes blazing with anger

“Is that all you’ve got?” I asked softly My body was tense and I died myself for whatever would come next.

Felicia didn’t disappoint in her reaction

Another sting. This time on my neck. It hurt far worse than the one on my cheek and a hiss involuntarily drew from my I was still restrained by the guards and couldn’t even lift a finger to press my hand against the itching and painful bruise th was surely forming.

My breathing grew heavy as the tears filled my eyes but I shut them tightly willing myself to not let them fall. I wasn’t going to let myself be degraded to the point of crying. Not this time.

Memories of the past flashed on my mind just like the many times before. This time I let them carry me and didn’t bother to stop the swell of emotions that made my anger grow. The pair of the now was enveloped by the pains and trials of the previous years.

“Stop pretending Daria. I am a woman like you,” Felicia mocked me now. I opened my eyes and through the blurry vision saw her standing closer to me. She held the whip still and the tail end of it dragged on the floor all serpentine-like. “You want Caleb back. You’re an opportunist just waiting for the right moment. But I’ll be the one to marry Caleb. I’m the next Luna. And you cannot stop me.”

A chuckle brokenly left my lips. She still thought I was after Caleb?

I was doing this to protect Sabrina from further retaliation by Felicia and her family and She still had her mind on a man I didn’t want.

How laughable.

My laughter increased and she couldn’t hold it back anymore. This time she slapped me. The ring on her finger dug painfully into my cheek and the force would have left me sprawled on the street if it weren’t for the firm hold of the guards.

“You’re nothing Daria. You came to this pack before as nothing. And you will leave as nothing, you should have just stayed in your lane,” Felicia hissed.

Then I watched as she raised the whip again. This time she raised it high above her head as if to strike me on my face. I tensed, a shard of fear striking through my heart. But I didn’t move. Or rather I couldn’t let myself flinch.

But before she could let it fall suddenly a growl filled the street.

“Enough!”

Caleb appeared as if out of nowhere. His presence changed everything. The guards holding me before instantly released me and I nearly fell over from how fast it happened. But I braced myself with my arms and hissed as pain ran through my body.

Felicia’s heels clicked on the tarred ground as she rushed to Caleb’s side. She dropped the whip and rushed to explain.

“Caleb, this is just a small matter. I-”

“When I want your fucking explanation, I’ll ask for it.”

Caleb’s voice boomed, a threat hanging in the air unspoken. I didn’t bother looking at them and instead turned my gaze to

the floor.

My breathing steadied and I finally found the strength to stand albeit shakily.

“So this is what you encourage a daughter of your family to do der Talen,” Caleb addressed the oldest person involved. “Behind my back you attack Daria?”

“This is merely a punishment, Alpha Caleb,” Elder Talen’s brave he appeared paler and his eyes darted around before he finally

seemed to have suddenly vanished into thin air. Instead ided, “It means nothing
