Chapter 48

Daria’s POV

I held my breath all the way to my room while simultaneously inking the moon goddess that Alpha Kingston hadn’t turned his back and caught me fleeing.

As soon as I was safely settled in my bedroom I let out a low sig and dropped the bags to the floor.

This was the worst.

More than that actually.

I raised my hands to palm my face only to realize just how much it trembled.

I was afraid.

Not of Caleb but of my father. If I could ever call him that.

All my life he had been the monster I held in the worst of my nightmares. He was biologically my father. I even resembled him a bit as far as I knew from what everyone else said in the Red Vale Pack when I was much younger.

But he was never my father. Not in any sense of the word.

He never acted like one or cared to be one unless when he needed me to act as his irrefutable pawn.

Alpha Kingston was where my nightmare began. Not Caleb. Caleb may have treated me terribly from the first time he met me. But Alpha Kingston of the Red Vale Pack was an absolute monster.

He was the one who hated me for the crime of being born to his bloodline.

I dropped to my knees and curled up into a fetal position. I pressed my face against my palms and realized I was crying. Because above all, one thing was certain. I may be safe for now. But what happened after that?

Now I was trapped in my bedroom praying that Alpha Kingston wouldn’t come to know of my presence here before I could leave the wisteria Pack.

Dear moon goddess, please help me.

I closed my eyes and pressed my back to the door. Exhaustion won over my common sense to get up and lay down on the bed. My limbs were weak and I didn’t feel like moving an inch.

Chapter 48

I turned around in a daze as the knocking started again this time with more frequency.

I heard shuffling and mulled voices on the other end which made me hesitate but only briefly.

Reaching for the door handle I turned it cautiously only for me see three concerned looks of varying intensity.

Sabrina was one of them. Without saying a word she quickly rushed forward and pulled me into a hug.

“I was so worried. By the goddess. What’s wrong with you? Whyidn’t you answer the door earlier? Are you feeling okay

Daria?”

So dazed was I that I was speechless by the barrage of questions that she hit me with.

Then came Jacob’s soothing and indulgent tone aimed not at me but at his mate who hung on to me for dear life.

“Be careful Sabrina. She’s probably just waking up. I’m sure she didn’t hear us knocking all this time.”

I nodded emphatically while warmth overwhelmed me. It brought tears to my eyes that I was so cared for by my best friend.

“By the goddess Daria,” Luckily Sabrina had relaxed upon hearing Jacob’s voice and she sniffled and wiped her eyes. “I was so scared. You know it’s getting harder for me to keep an eye on you like before.”

Remembering how Sabrina always stuck by my side when she was my personal maid before made me smile a little with nostalgic memories.

“As it should be,” I replied softly and patted her on the shoulder. I can start to take care of myself. I was just tired, that’s all.”

“Dealing with the injured warriors must have worn you down,” Chleb echoed my excuse very easily. His eyes met mine and he nodded as if to urge me forward. Unwittingly I nodded back.

It seemed he had something to talk to me about.

Jacob cleared his throat and reached his hand out to take Sabrina’s.

“Now that we’ve seen that she’s fine, I think it’s time we get home Dinner is waiting and my grandfather likes your presence during meals.”

Sabrina flushed visibly and gave me a slightly apologetic look. Seeing her face in a happy glow made my smile widen,

Despite my reservations against anyone or the Wisteria pack I was beginning to see that Beta Jacob truly had feelings for my best friend and it wasn’t just because of the mate bond.

A mate bond didn’t assure feelings.

Goddess knows that I already had experienced that firsthand.

Jacob pulled Sabrina away and they bade me a Goodnight as the left. Caleb cleared his throat and looked at the meaningfully it was then that I noticed she held a tray in his hats. My breath caught

“You didn’t come down for dinner again So I had the maids keep aside something for you,” His words were warm. So much so that i nearly thought I was still dreaming

My lips parted and I struggled for what to say Duf well him that you? Or do I just nod and move sin

Slowly I moved my head up and down feeling like I was a rubsort acting out feelings

I switched on a lamp. The warm glow wrapped around Caleb’s ir like a halo.

My heart traitorously began to beat faster.

As if this meant something.

“What do you want to discuss about Alpha Caleb?” I asked point lly while avoiding his gaze. I wasn’t sure it was such a good idea to have him in the same place I slept when we were all alon I maneuvered my way around him and removed the lid of the plate to see the mouth watering meal.
