Chapter 56
Caleb’s POV

“Spread out and check for any listeners.” I ordered once we neared our destination. The guards & took with me were small in number. Only about five. But they were the best and strongest of the warriors and they were fit to accompany me out of the pack today.
–
My reason for the day trip out of the pack was simple to speak with Alpha Tounsend. He was the Alpha of the Dartmouth pack and had been dead silent on the matter of the rogue’s attack since Raul had been exposed as a rogue leader himself. I suspected part of it was simply embarrassment at being deceived in such a way. But I couldn’t be too sure.
However the sense of urgency I saw in his letter was enough to get me to agree to a meeting on such short notice. It was late last night right after the chaos and throwing Alpha Kingston out of my pack that the letter had ended up in my desk delivered in the dead of night by a weary guard. It was also last night that I had responded in turn and agreed to the meeting. I set the time and place since it was at my convenience.
We had already left the main borders of the pack and were traversing through the forest. There seemed to be no danger ahead but I wasn’t about to let my guard down in any way.
Only once I burst into the clearing with my men did I finally relax. We were on time. But still there was a group that had arrived earlier than we had. Alpha Townsend was an averagely tall man woth broad shoulders but an even broader smile. This time he wasn’t smiling. Only a stoic expression sat on his face with his lips pressed together thinly. And he sat on a boulder in the middle of the clearing with his men behind him. They were only about five in number and I suspected the Dartmouth pack alpha had chosen to travel light for the same reason I had. L
Relaxing even more, I regarded the Alpha with cold eyes. He stood and bowed first to me as did the rest of his men. Only then did I bow in repose.
“Alpha Caleb. It has been far too long.” Alpha Townsend stated with ease while I took my seat.
“It truly has. If only you would have sent a letter earlier we could have cleared up many misunderstandings Townsend,” I responded while letting my lips curl upwards in an almost sardonic manner. He caught the tone and lowered his gaze briefly as if to acknowledge his slights against me.
After all, he should have been the first among the neighboring packs to reach out.
“My apologies for the delay Alpha Caleb. But I have my reasons Behind waiting. It came to my attention that we had some lapses in security. That had to be handled,” he sighed heavily and clasped his hands together. Then he continued, “I am aware the Dartmouth pack has a lot to prove in showing our intentions towards the wisteria pack. We have no doubts on
where we stand.”
“And where do you stand?” I asked with a sneer. I didn’t bother holding back my derision. “Come on Townsend. You have a reason why you called me here and it isn’t to simply discuss the past.”
“You’re right. My wish is to ally the Dartmouth pack with the Wisteria pack once more. This time for good.”
There it came
“What reason have I to ally with you? Everything needs a purpo must have sensed my dark mood for his words were cloyi ing a

Alpha Townsend sighed and shook his head.

“I know you have no reason to believe me, Alpha Caleb. But the gues are a problem for not just the Wisteria Pack. It’s a problem for all of us. Even the Dartmouth pack. And we have faced many setbacks by being involved without our knowledge,” he explained. “Part of the reason why I have been sent so far was not just to clean house. It was also to conduct some investigations.”
“And what did you find?” I countered with..
“Plans. Hidden plots to overthrow each pack in this region. It’s not just a ragtag team of rogues we are facing. It’s those on the inside too,” he replied.
I fell silent. Suddenly the atmosphere had turned cold as a result of his words. I grit my teeth. He wouldn’t say those words if he didn’t know the truth.
But a plot like this could only be carried out by an organized tea. Not rogues.
I thought of my next words and decided in an instant. If Alpha Townsend was willing to work with me then I would not let this offer linger too long.
“Alpha Kingston is no longer an ally of the Wisteria Pack. We have our own suspicions. And it seems you do as well,” I sneak by saying. “I would like to discuss the terms of our alliance. Having both our packs on the same side will make it easier to discover the truth.”
Alpha Townsend nodded. Despite his outward calmness I couldense the eagerness in his eyes. He was pleased by this outcome. And so was I.
The discussion lasted a while and we were about to round up and exit the clearing less than an hour later.
But just as we stood to leave I suddenly froze.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alpha Townsend frown as well He looked like he had sensed the same thing.
My senses were tingling with a wave of alarm rushing through . And my instincts were never wrong.
We had intruders. And it was likely they were waiting to ambush us.
Without moving another inch I gestured silently to my men. By my side I saw Alpha Townsend do the same. Everyone became quiet and one could hear a pin drop in the stark silence
The leaves of the trees in the forest rustled with the wind and for a split second I thought I had been imagining all of it.
Then out of the blue a loud yell pierced the atmosphere.
“Here!”
Whoever had shouted our suddenly broke off into a growl whichurned into a pained how! I didn’t wait for a second. The feeling of my bones and muscles shifting into my wolf form took over quickly. I all but tore off my shirt as the howls and growls of the enemy got closer The battle began

Adrenaline coursed through me. I bit off the neck of one rogue and pounced on another in one go. But as we continued to fight I noticed it. The rogues were soon to outnumber us
Come on Caleb. Think of a plan!
The idea came in an instant and I gave orders to my men who nodded and broke off to the left through the trees while alpha Townsend seemed to notice my plan and split in another direction. Rogues followed after them but I wasn’t done.
Immediately I dove to the right and began to run. Several of the kept my speed low enough for them to catch up. Enough that I with the rest. Eventually I came upon the clearer had passed on
