Chapter 77
Caleb’s POV

I had to admit: I was running with my tail tucked between my les
Facing Daria was one thing, but the wrath of her cousin was another.
Leaving Daria with Eric Nolan, I couldn’t help but think of how deep in shit I was in.
Not only did I have to work to win her over – and her furious cousin too, but Felicia was pregnant.
Pregnant with MY child.
Remembering that made me scowl and dread was my primary notion as I walked down the hallway to have breakfast. Unexpectedly, I bumped into none other than Master Killian, who looked mildly tense, but still unbothered.
He bowed in greeting to me.
“Master Killian,”I greeted him.
“Alpha Caleb, it’s a good thing to see you here. The delegates are about to leave, and I will be going with them,” he stated. “I believe we still have a lot to discuss. The Crimson Pack wishes to pursue an alliance with your pack. But I will have to discuss it with our Alpha as well.”
“Understandable,” I agreed. “I look forward to hearing from him as well. Would your mate be going with you?”
We were both moving past the garden. The dawn had long since broken out into a magnificent sunrise that cast a golden glow throughout each sunlit corridor. The sharp squawk of a bir made Killian turn his head to glance out the arched walkway towards the carefully groomed foliage and flowerbeds.
Still, one couldn’t help but notice the slight frown on his face, as if he was deep in thought.
“Eric will stay here, to help Daria. And also to send word to me if anything happens out of the ordinary,” he finally replied. Though he didn’t seem happy about it. From his tone it implied that he did not agree with that decision.
“If you would like, I can persuade him to leave with you,” it came out as a statement, but was in fact a question.
I didn’t want to overstep, because no matter what, what happened betweenMaster Killian and his mate was their own business.
“You won’t do a thing, Alpha Caleb. You see, if you did, Eric would become even more stubborn about it,” he sounded ruefully amused as he turned back to me, after watching the bird flap its wings and take a drink at the fountain. “I like birds. They have freedom and will not give it up for anything. Once they have their hearts set on something it’s difficult for them. Impossible, in fact.”
I understood immediately. He wasn’t talking about birds.
“Unfortunate that you like them, then,” I thought about how stubborn that mate of mine was as well. Was it a genetic thing?
reasonable.
Remembering the many instances of facing Daria’s stubbornnes, I had to ponder briefly on that theory. It sounded
“Even more unfortunate that we can’t help the matters of the heart, Alpha Caleb” he paused. “I have heard the tales of how you treated her in the past. Just like Eric, I’m not entirely please I would like nothing more than to agree with Eric and take her away from here”

I straightened, tense as shit and ready to defend myself even though honestly, I had nothing to defend. My actio them were nothing short of abominable.
“But.” He continued as if he hadn’t just suggested posing an obstacle between my mate and me. “I am also aware that circumstances are not ideal. Alpha Kingston is waiting for a change to strike. The Red Vale pack has begun to grow powerful, enough to seize and defeat any pack that is not yours. For now, taking Daria with us would paint a target on our backs, and make us the number one enemy.”
“I suppose I should feel grateful then, Master Killian” I didn’t mean for those words to come out sarcastic, but it did. After all, the thought of having Daria even a short distance away from me filled me with restlessness.
“You can, but not to me. Thank your Beta for putting in a good word for you last night,” he chuckled. “Besides, if the Goddess herself has given you a chance to unscrew what you screwed up, then who am I to interfere?”
For the first time I saw hints of acceptance and understanding in his gaze and I nodded. Despite us talking like we were equals, he was still my elder in age- about a decade – and definitely had more experiences and infinitely more patience than I currently did.
By now we had reached the front doors of the mansion and I noticed Jacob speaking with one of the delegates. They were ready to leave, and I turned to Master Killian to bid him a goodbye. Out of the corner of my eye I saw someone linger by the shadowed pillar near the delegates, glancing in my direction. It was one of the guards who I had instructed to keep Felicia’s and Elder Talen’s whereabouts a secret.
“I shall take your words to heart,” I stated as I watched the group converse.
“I expect you to. You have a heavy responsibility to bear, Alpha Caleb,” Master Killian sounded grim. “And no one will help you bear it better than she will. You have a responsibility to her as well. Just like I do to Eric. Protecting her is one of your foremost duties, and it’s one I will hold you to in the future.”
Our conversation ended there with another delegate approaching us.
The talk of responsibility left me feeling jaded, and with a heavy heart, I thought of Felicia while watching the delegates exit the main pack compound.
I had to make a decision quickly. If not, things could turn very ugly really quickly.
“Callum,” I called the guard’s name while I walked towards the small training hall in the mansion. I needed to let off some steam, and to pound something into dust with my fists. The empty training hall echoed with the footsteps of the guard that had been watching from the sidelines beforehand.
“Alpha.” he greeted while I took off my shirt and grabbed the wrist brace off the rack and put them on.
“What’s the status of Lady Felicia and Elder Talen?” I asked coldly.
The guards report was monotony spoken and objective.
“Lady Felicia still demands to see you. We have informed her that you are occupied for the time being, and have made sure she has her meals on time. However, she insists on seeing you directly,” he stated.
“I see,” I processed his words briefly before nodding. “Move her one of the rooms in Safehouse A. Assign one of the more discreet maids to her. The maid is to ensure she gets her health hecked every few days as well. In her condition, she might art out to provoke a reaction. Inform me if things get too much Remember no one else should ever find out.”
“Yes Alpha,” the guard bowed, before continuing. “What about ler Talen?”
I paused; that was a difficult question.
Elder Talen was still an Elder of the Wister Pack and a member still held enough power that could affect my duties in the future
the council So even if I found a way to keep him silent, he
