Chase Me Alpha (Daria and Caleb) novel Chapter 76

Chapter 76

Daria’s POV

The sounds moved in and out of focus as I returned to reality.

My forehead felt very cold and I tossed around, murmuring to myself.

Where was I? Why was it so warm…?

The sound of footsteps made me stir even more and I groaned as my headache came more and more into focus. But then, a hand touched my forehead, cool and exactly what I needed. So refreshing.

“Miss?” the soft voice of the maid finally forced me to open my eyes. Slowly I took in my surroundings, quiet and my body feeling a slight ache running through it.

I was back in the bedroom at the Wisteria Pack.

Someone must have carried me back here.

I barely noticed the maid’s silent exit, and instead reached shakily for a pitcher of water that sat by the bedside. I felt overwhelmingly thirsty and it honestly shocked me when I finished gulping down the whole pitcher, wetting my lips and feeling heavy.

The headache had barely cooled down a bit and the door opened a sharp sound that was like knives digging into my eardrums.

Unwittingly I groaned out loud and shut my eyes against the pillows, trying to bury my head in the soft fabric.

“Daria,” it was Caleb’s calm voice.

I stilled. unable to speak. Suddenly I felt a palm graze my arm and gently pull me back, stopping me from suffocating myself in the bed. The headache had reduced considerably now but left a slight heaviness at the back of my head.

“How do you feel?”He asked, and I swallowed, awkwardly nodding as the maid handed me another glass of water like I hadn’t just finished an entire pitcher. Surprisingly though, my thirst remained and I gulped the glass down eagerly before wiping my lips and handing it back to her.

That was when Iproperly looked at Caleb. The sun was just rising and in the slight dimness of the room, I saw Caleb’s posture relaxed and slightly hunched over as he stood by the edge of my bed. His eyes had some dark circles under it, and his weariness was so obvious I nearly felt a stirring of concern and pity for him.

Nearly

But the intensity of his gaze didn’t stop.

“How did you sleep?” I asked, mostly to distract both of us before things turned into a more darker territory. I wasn’t ready to discuss what had happened last night with anyone, and especially not with him.

“Well,” He responded, even though his figure looked exhausted the bone. I lifted my brow in astonishment at his obvious

Sighing inwardly I decided I had to break through this stubborn masculinity of the Alpha that’t sull felt so much complicated emotions for

“Dont lie, Alpha Caleb. I can see you’re exhausted. It’s still so car in the morning, you can afford to get a little more rest,” pointed out.

He sighed and broke off into a small chuckle.

“You don’t have to worry. I simply wished to make sure you were okay. You were out in the rain last night.” He admitted, a phrase that set my heart beating fast.

This measure of soliness from him was no longer as shocking as it used to be, but it wasn’t any less striking.

“Okay,” I replied and didn’t say any more.

I was still just waking up, and I had no intentions of disturbing y mind with things that could be handled later in the day.

Things were far too raw, too open and too soon to talk about yet

Of course, Caleb acutely sensed that from me as well, and he fell silent. The quietude of the morning was punctuated in those brief moments by the sounds of roosters crowing in the distance and the sounds of guards changing shifts.

Then the maid returned holding a basket of fresh laundry.

She glanced at both of us and shuffled away, as if afraid she woul interfere in our private discussion.

Suddenly, a knock on the door came, and startled all of us. I resolutely stood from the bed, my feet touching the cool hardwood floor and moving to crack the door open just a tad.

It revealed Eric, who stood there, wearing a look of concern. As soon as he saw it was me, the relief that showed on his face was palpable.

“By the goddess, Daria,” He pulled me into a brief hug. He was wearing a light knit shirt which smelt warmly of his musk, a welcoming, familial one that made me relax against his chest. “How are you feeling?”

I was mildly confused; had he seen me last night? My memories were hazy and I wondered if he had been the one to carry me back to bed last night.

“I’m fine, Eric.” I assured my cousin, and he noticed Caleb standing by my bed. The glance he gave to the Alpha was cold and indescribably frustrated.

“Alpha Caleb,” He addressed Caleb coldly. I blinked in shock; had something happened between the two of them that I didn’t know about?

Caleb straightened and regarded Eric with a look of understanding that I couldn’t decipher, before moving toward the door. As he brushed past me, I could detect a whiff of his heavy scent that lingered in my

nostrils.

“I’ll give you two some time to talk.”He said before making his exit. A part of me felt like he was running away I had no idea why.

from me. but

“Daria,” Eric turned to me with a small growl, and suddenly pull me into his arms again. I was shocked, and leaned back to look into my cousin’s eyes.

“What happened last night?” I demanded and he huffed.

“Nothing” he finally said. “But I swear to the moon goddess, if nt for the others, I would have probably committed treason last night.

Then he told me, in a pained voice that spoke volumes, “I heard what happened to you, all those years ago.”

My heart stuttered and I trembled slightly.

Not because of shame, but because of pain. No matter how mu time passed, the pain was always there, waiting to be felt. Time only made it easier to forget in the moment, but it never
