Chapter 79
Caleb’s POV
The tension in my heart didn’t case up even after I had heard everything between Sabrina and Daria. I knew this was my chance to make things right.
“Daria,” I said her name with a tight voice. She stopped talking and stared at me, as if trying to gauge my next actions.
“I want to end this uncertainty between us. Don’t you want to as well?”
My question made her eyes widen briefly, before flickering to an expression of stoic coldness that I knew was simply a mask.
“Just because you overheard everything doesn’t guarantee me ging you a chance, Caleb. What’s done is done. I don’t want to go back to those times-” She folded her arms and gave me another long look. “So there. That’s my decision.”
“You say that.” I spoke daringly, taking a step towards her. How lucky I was that no one else was around for me to bother with pretenses. For now I could be completely honest with her, without the need of putting my duties above my heart.
“But you still want this. And here I am, offering it to you. We have a chance to start over, Daria. To be a proper family this time. I want this. And I know you do too.”
She couldn’t refute my words, but I knew she was far too stubborn to back down either.
I took another step closer, then another, until we were just a few feet apart. But just as I was about to close the gap, she took a step back. I frowned slightly, unable to stop my displeasure from showing.
“It’s not that easy, Caleb,” She finally said, staring at me. Her gaze was complicated, to say the least. “The mate bond may remain but there’s no way I’ll allow myself to be treated that way again. Just because I’m… CONFUSED… doesn’t mean I can accept it.”
It was like every word she spoke was designed to remind me of how much I had fucked up.
Nevertheless, I persisted, taking another step closer to her. She took a step back, and this time bumped into the small coffee table beside the couch.
She cried out and her knees buckled, hitting the sharp edge of the table, and I rushed to grab hold of her arm firmly, my other arm wound round her waist to prevent her from falling.
Her eyes were like pools of water that I couldn’t look away from, and I felt the sting of the mate bond thrumming in my chest. Daria tried to stand up but her knees trembled slightly. When the scent of blood reached my nostrils i looked down and saw that her knees were grazed, causing a terrible bruise.
“I’m fine,” She insisted, stubbornly as always. I hardly refrained from rolling my eyes at my mate’s insistent behaviour and simply lifted her up bridal style.
Daris tensed instantly in my arms, resistant and upset.
“Drop me at once, Alpha Caleb,” She demanded fiercely.
Instead of responding verbally I gave a non-committal hum and began walking over to the stairs.
“Alpha Caleb! Where are you taking me?!” she yelled this time at i looked down at her as i ascended the staircase. Despite her obstinate behaviour I couldn’t help but admire the way she aned against my chest, her body clearly uncooperative with her words.
“You don’t have to shout,” I chided her softly. “Unless you want to your room, Healer. I’m sure you have a medicine box laying

“Oh,” she breathed in realization. Then, a moment after. “But you don’t have to carry me there. I can walk all by myself.”
“Well maybe consider indulging me for a little while, love,” I responded curtly, unable to stop myself. “It’s not everyday I get to take care of you. Or every day that you’ll let me.”
She inhaled sharply but not a word slipped out after that. Yet I could feel her heartbeat speed up exactly, her pulse thrumming in her body with a rhythm that sent my thoughts going to places they shouldn’t. Her body, warm and soft, with the most pleasant floral scent, was now relaxed against mine.
Once I entered her bedroom, I moved to place her by the edge her bed, and turned to reach for the locked medicine box.
“I’m sure you have an ointment here that can help with the scaring,” I muttered to myself. My movements were more for my sake than hers. I was trying to distract myself from the awkwardness that had risen once again.
I swore inwardly to myself; it must truly be a punishment from he Moon Goddess that I couldn’t do anything for my mate without it coming off as ungraceful.
I had never fumbled this bad in my life before, EVER.
I had just grabbed the ointment as well as a small cloth soaked with antiseptic to wipe her wounds when I heard a quiet voice from behind me.
“You’re right.”
The soft admission of Daria made me turn to look at her. Her form, haloed by the stream of golden light coming in from the windows behind her, looked intensely more fragile than before.
my
“I’m afraid,” she softly spoke. “Afraid that things will turn out the same way again. Caleb, I’ve never had a good life before.
