Damn, this was tough.

I dodged the coming blow, breaths heaving. My muscles strained from the speed I had to move, like a warning to not overdo it. Yet I couldn’t help but push myself past the brink. A beat of sweat rolled down my face, wetting my lashes and stinging my eyes a little. I raised my hand to wipe it swiftly, ears prickling at the sound of Eric’s voice.
“Don’t be distracted, cousin,” and that was the only other warning he gave before charging at me again. I ducked and rolled, grunting slightly as my knees hit the ground with a thud and I shifted my weight, standing shakily.
I knew he was deliberately being slow, and worse, telegraphing his movements so that I wouldn’t miss it. Yet, I was already so damn exhausted.
“Break,” I couldn’t help the well of relief that flooded my veins as I heard him finally say. “We’ll continue the day after
tomorrow.”
I opened my mouth to protest and he raised his hand and a brow, a move which I had come to recognize as an ‘Eric’s about to lecture me’ pose.
“You just started training. You need more time for your body to recuperate and build up endurance. You should know this, since you’re a very accomplished Healer. Pushing yourself too fast will not give us the kind of progress we want.”
Shakily I exhaled, feeling disappointment. Despite it, I knew he was right. It was just…
“I didn’t expect training to be this hard. I thought I already got better,” I grumbled more to myself than to him.
Nevertheless he chuckled and patted my head as we walked side by side back to the mansion.
“You are doing exceptionally well for someone who learnt to fight on her own. Trust me, Daria, not everyone can do this. With your current skill level you can take on most warriors and come out of it okay.”
Okay.
I replayed his words. It wasn’t super high praise but it was a good start.
It didn’t stop the sting of knowing that I wasn’t as good as I had thought. But the calm sincerity in his words was a balm to my bruised dignity.
“You didn’t break a sweat though. I didn’t expect my cousin to be so strong,” I teased, changing the subject to focus on him. His black t-shirt and fitted athletic pants held not a hint of dampness like mine did. While I had sweated buckets and struggled to keep up, he was fluidly elegant and didn’t even seem like he was exerting himself.
Unsurprisingly, I caught the back of Eric’s neck tinge red, which spread upwards over his cheeks as well. I had begun to learn that he wasn’t good at taking compliments, or rather, he was extremely responsive to them.
“It’s Killian,” he said. “I was already good at fighting when we me But he was insistent on my training. Said he wanted me to be better.”
Hearing his voice soften when he spoke of his mate made me relize exactly what I wanted for myself. A partnership like Killian’s and Eric’s were for the history books. And I saw the same thing in Sabrina and Jacob as well. They complimented each other. Despite my best friend’s sassy and mildly impulsive ersonality, Jacob somehow mellowed her out with his lighthearted calmness and easygoing ways. And Sabrina must have had an impactful effect on her mate as well.
“It sounds to me like he was just worried about your safety,” I solly remarked, looking forward to catching the glimpse of the sun rising over the horizon. Damn, it was still early, I though

“Hmm.” he grunted, falling silent, though it wasn’t out of tension He looked a little contemplative, with a small smile on his face. Anyone could guess what he was thinking.
I sighed to myself, wrapping my arms around my midsection, feeling not only the dull overall ache from my punishing training, but also the longing that overwhelmed me to the fullest
If I could have this sort of relationship with Caleb, then I wouldnt mind giving him a second chance.
I already had, kind of.
After our conversation yesterday afternoon, he had left to continue his duties, but the look we exchanged back then was one full of promise… full of hope for the future. Something which I hadn’t dared to have for a long time before.
I wondered if he felt it too.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?”
I was jolted back to reality from the words that came from Eric. We already were close to the mansion, a few paces away from the front door, but as I processed his words and met his gaze. I could tell he wanted to say something. Unwittingly we ended up slowing down our pace before coming to a full stop at the flowers that surrounded the fence of the mansion.
“You mean Alpha Caleb,” I stated before folding my arms – ouch in a small huff. “You may not like him, but he is the Alpha of the WIsteria Pack.”
“I dont give a fuck who he is, Daria. I’m more concerned that you don’t keep your distance from him.” he growled. He turned to me with eyes full of frustration tinged with unmistakable concern. “Daria, I may not have been there when he hurt you last time, but I’ll be damned if I let him hurt you again don’t want you to let your emotions get in the way of the truth.”
“He’s my mate,” I said, unable to remove the lump in my throat. Hearing the fierce protectiveness that Eric showed towards me was nothing short of touching. But… “And I believe some people are worthy of second chances if they show remorse.”
“So you plan on staying here with him,” He stated rather than asked.
“I plan on seeing where things go, Eric,” I replied. “At last for now. He has shown he deserves at least one more chance. I am not a fool. Nor am I a slave to my emotions. I just… I want the kind of love that you have with Killian. Is that so bad?”
Eric fell silent now, unable to refute my words.
He turned to glance at the mansion, before muttering, “I think you shouldn’t trust him. He’s a powerful ally, Daria. But don’t let him hurt you twice.”
I noticed he was staring right at something and followed his gaze only to meet a pair of grey eyes. Caleb.
My heart skipped.
He had been watching us, standing by the front door.
That means he must have heard everything Eric and I had just said to each other.
My face heated up as I felt his eyes bore into mine.
Eric didn’t react to Caleb’s presence much and simply moved forward, brushing past him with a curt, “Good Morning Alpha Caleb.”
At least he was polite, I thought to myself. But that likely had more to do with Caleb’s position as an Alpha and a strong ally to take down our common foe: my father, Alpha Kingston.
If not for that, I suspected Eric would not have even said a word Caleb.

Chapter 80
As Eric left, I slowly approached the front doors of the mansion.
Caleb folded his arms, his eyes looking me up and down.

“Good morning,” I said, without preamble. This time I didn’t address him as Alpha Caleb. That had been a way for me to distance myself from him, a way of bringing formality into our encounters to protect myself, to hide my feelings. Now, i was removing that boundary.
“You’ve started training.” he stated, his eyes brooding and intens
“Mmhmm,” I nodded easily.
