My stomach felt queasy as I reached the private dining room for breakfast with Caleb. I was nervous, and obviously so. But it was a kind of nervousness that was more exciting than debilitating. I wanted to see where this morning would go – no, where this day would lead us to.

As I entered, I recalled the last time that I had set foot in here: the private dinner I’d had with Caleb. Back then I wasn’t as sure of myself as I was now.

I wore a simple black cotton shirt dress, which was paired with patent leather kitten heels. My hair was styled elegantly into a half-up, half-down hairstyle with a few copper-red strands framing my face. I had put on a select perfume which was said to be one of the most luxurious ones in the region, its overtones extracted from a flower that was not only rare but bloomed once in a year.

In short, I was truly dressing to impress.

Caleb wasn’t there when I entered, and I glanced around the elegantly decorated room. The feast of a breakfast table was set, with various dishes ranging from scrambled eggs, sausages, sandwiches, porridge and even a select range of finger foods were laid out. A soft glow of the morning sun was in the entire room and painted it with an ambient scene of a slow romantic morning.

After the strain my body had gone through and the rigorous exercise of training this morning, I swallowed audibly, only to hear a deep baritone chuckle behind me.

“Like what you see?” Caleb was the one who snuck up behind me. I hadn’t even heard him enter. My cheeks flushed and I suddenly couldn’t find the words to explain.

But there was no need to, as he got nearer, his scent enveloped me. His arm wrapped around my waist and tugged me closer until our chests were flush. This time, unlike other times before, I didn’t scream or rage at him. I didn’t lash out, or pull away.

No.

Instead I leaned in, daring to glance up into his eyes.

“It’s not my fault,” I muttered. “The training today was a lot. And I’m starving.”

“It’s alright love,” Caleb smirked, not out of pity or mocking, but fondness. His striking eyes had a glow to it, one that showed his happiness. Yet, in them i detected a tinge of hesitation and…

He looked away briefly and pulled me to the seat, which was at the right hand side of the head of the small table. With one hand pulling out the seat, the Alpha’s other hand held my wist firmly, and his warmth seeped through my clothes to my skin.

This time I couldn’t deny the heat of his touches.

And as he took his seat, I asked absently, trying to start up a conversation, “What took you long? I didn’t expect to find the room empty when I got here.”

We began to eat, and Caleb took a bite and nodded a little before responding, “It’s nothing serious. I had to see to a report from one of the guards. Don’t worry about it, love.”

Raising a brow, I hummed to myself as the burst of flavours in my mouth distracted me for a split second.

“Did it have anything to do with Alpha Kingston or the Red Vale Pack?”

He sighed; as if he could predict that the conversation would be steered in that direction. But he didn’t otherwise make a comment about it and only said, “Trust me, if it had anything to do with that, I would have told you. It was only a small pack matter.”

“A small pack matter?” I repeated, my mind working furiously. “Does it have anything to do with Elder Talen then?”

Caleb glanced at me with a heavy look.

I blinked innocently at him but wasn’t about to let him deflect.

“I haven’t heard much about Elder Talen these past two days,” I said. ‘Or Lady Felicia,’ I thought the last part in my head.

Caleb stiffened a little before abruptly cutting off whatever else I was about to say.

“Elder Talen is currently being investigated for crimes of colluding. And… Felicia isn’t going to be a problem from now on.”

His last words gave me pause and I frowned slightly. What did he mean by that?

I busied myself with taking several bites of the french toast with whipped cream and scrambled eggs, while pondering this matter.

“Honestly, love,” he sighed and I was pulled out of my head to glance at him. He had finished the food on his plate already, I noticed, and as he reached for the teapot of coffee he continued, “I don’t want to ruin our mornings with news like that. Can you put a little trust in me and let it go?”

I bit my bottom lip, feeling a stirring of guilt in my system.

Caleb was clearly doing his best to please me. And I had promised myself to try things out and see where it went. But now here i was, thinking about topics that would paint a black mark on our day.

“I’m sorry,” I murmured, reaching my hand out to place it atop of his. He stilled and looked at me, his absolutely lovely grey eyes searching. I cleared my throat and changed the topic to a much lighter one, “I got an invitation from Sabrina last night. About her mating ceremony with Jacob.”

“Yes,” he nodded. “I got one from Jacob just this morning. He sends his greetings by the way.”

“Oh,” I replied. I had once thought that Jacob, who was Caleb’s best friend, was a bad fit for Sabrina. They came from two different worlds, and I had even expected their treatment of her to be similar to how I had been treated.

To my pleasant surprise, it wasn’t.

“I never expected Jacob to settle down so quickly actually,” Caleb smiled ruefully. “He never used to think about it. Never even bothered searching out his mate. I always thought he would stay single forever.”

“Really?” I scoffed. “Of course you did. I have to say, I wasn’t expecting them to make such a good match. But… It’s good. I’m really happy for both of them.”

Somehow from there the topic turned onto Caleb’s and Jacob’s adventures when they were younger. Or more like, Mis-adventures, as Caleb began to regale me with every funny tale and act they had been up to as children.
