Chapter 81

Caleb’s POV

‘Do I have your permission?’ I thought to myself, waiting for her response.

I searched her gaze, wondering if I could be blessed with the gift of reading her mind. She was incredibly unpredictable and mysterious with her actions sometimes.

And that was one of the reasons I loved her.

Daria’s eyes met mine briefly, before she cleared her throat and tucked her hair hack behind an ear, exposing the reddened flush that had spread across.

“Well, since you asked so nicely,” she muttered a little too calmly. I smiled at her, putting all the charm on while I offered my arm out to her. “But you must let me take a shower first.”

The way that her lips curled into a small pout made me chuckle, relaxing as she tugged on my arm and we crossed the foyer.

“Deal,” I calmly said. I watched as she ascended the steps, getting up to the top of the stairwell before looking over her shoulder. Almost as if she could feel me looking at her. Our eyes met and I saw a faint flicker of something that made my lips quirk up into a small smile: hope.

As she left for her room, I heard footsteps approach stealthily behind me, and I knew exactly who it was.

I hadn’t been waiting out there for Daria alone; the arrival of Callum made me turn and my smile had faded into a thin line.

“You’re late,” my voice was nothing short of cutting and the guard I trusted so much bowed lowly, lowering his head almost to the point of kowtowing to me.

“I am sorry Alpha. The search took a lot longer than I expected. We’re-”

I raised my hand to cut him off and he instantly fell silent.

I wasn’t unaware of the many possible ways information could leak.

“Come with me,” I said, moving towards the direction of the study.

Callum followed silently behind me. As soon as we entered the study, I picked up the pitcher of water.

It was far too early for alcohol…

Pouring a glass of water I gestured silently for Callum to continue.

“How has the investigation been going? I believe you should have the report ready by now,” I said.

He lowered his head a little. “Alpha, we have searched most of Elder Talen’s home so far. But there isn’t anything noteworthy yet. The correspondence is being checked as we speak.”

I growled as frustration rose up within me. There was no way that they couldn’t find anything on Elder Talen. He wasn’t innocent; he was so far too good at hiding his tracks.

“Search for any hidden doors and basements. Make sure all corners are thoroughly checked. And interview every staff member in the house. One of them must have seen something or knows something that can pin him down”

No way was I letting Elder Talen free just like that. This wasn’t just about the actions he had taken to push Felicia into the position of Luna. It was about the way he had led his own faction into borderline disrespect and plainly questioning my abilities as Alpha. There had to be something there that I was missing. And whatever that thing was had to be incriminating.

“Alpha, some of the Elders will ask questions, though,” Callm pointed out and I gave him a glare that made him quiet down.

“I don’t believe it’s your prerogative to question me, Callum. Do what I ask and let me handle the rest. Be discreet. And don’t let anyone find out.” I paused, deciding to change the topic. Walking over to the window, I watched several members of the pack and my staff mill about. “What about Lady Felicia?”

Callum exhaled a little, a break in his otherwise normally stoic behaviour.

“The maid reports that Lady Felicia is not doing so well. She isn’t eating as much as usual. And she continues to insist on seeing you, Alpha. I fear she may be sick.”

“Then send for the fucking pack doctor,” I turned to stare him down. It was infuriating how much that talk of that woman could spoil my mood. Just hearing about her was like finding out the world was ending.

And worse, I was unable to free myself from her now.

Thinking of the child in Felicia’s womb felt wrong. She was the wrong woman. Had always been the wrong choice.

Yet…

I couldn’t bear to lose another child. Another heir.

I couldn’t bear to do it.

But if Daria ever found out… then it was game over.

How was I going to tell her that Felicia was pregnant with my child? I had no way to win that battle. If I told her now, I would be giving up all hope of ever getting her back.

Fuck my life.

Groaning to myself, I raised my hand to rake through my hair.

“Have the doctor look Lady Felicia over. She is likely doing this as provocation. But just in case, have the maid monitor her meals. Whatever she eats more of should be given to her. But do not overindulge her. She’s pregnant, not an invalid.”

“Yes Alpha,” his words did little to case the dread and unease.

Then the two sharp knocks that came on the door pulled me out of that mire of thoughts.

I silently dismissed Callum with a warning glance. Being in my trusted circle of guards, he would duly keep his mouth shut.

As he opened the door and saw who it was on the other side, he stopped shortly to bow.

“Beta Jacob, good morning,” Callum greeted.

My brows rose as I saw Jacob’s straight form, his eyes unreadable as he nodded for Callum to rise.

There was nothing urgent that would bring Jacob here this early.

What was he doing here?

The question was answered as Jacob dismissed Callum and stepped in, shutting the door behind him.

“You’re out early,” I remarked lightly, folding my arms as I weighed my options. Had he heard anything from the past couple of minutes?

“Yep,” Jacob appeared to be none the wiser, crossing over to plop down on the soft couch he favored whenever he visited. “Actually I came to give you something. A personal invitation for the Alpha.

From the inner pocket of his leather jacket he took out a blue envelope that had gold embossed on the edges in a classic geometric pattern. The envelope was wax sealed with a pale blue wax seal with the monogram of Jacob’s family crest on it.

“Thought since you’re going to be my best man, I should deliver the invite myself,” he finished, waving his hand. “By the way, what was that whole thing about?”

“What?” I asked, absently breaking the seal on the envelope and opening the invitation to read the careful elegant cursive script.

“That guard that just left. He’s one of your special knights, isn’t he? What’s going on?”

Upon hearing that, I whipped my head to stare at my best friend.

His tone was casual, and so was his posture, but the look in his eyes was clear to me, who had trained with him and been raised with him side by side.

“You heard,” I stated. It wasn’t a question; and Jacob didn’t deny it either. “Look, whatever it is you want to say-”

“Damn right I have something to say,” Jacob growled. As an Alpha it was practically disrespectful, worthy of a punishment. But he wasn’t speaking to me as a subordinate but as a friend. “What’s all this about that woman getting pregnant? You want to explain that to me?”
