Chase Me Alpha (Daria and Caleb) novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Caleb’s POV

Seething was an understatement of how I felt. I was furious. On the edge of being driven mad.

Daria stared back at me with unusually cold eyes. She looked surprised that I’d even mentioned the Beta Raul of the Dartmouth pack.

“What does that have to do with you?”her words were like shards cutting at every last bit of patience I had.

“Because you’re my mate. Who is he. Daria? Tell me the truth, or I Tilted my head. “Don’t tell me he’s someone special to you?”

“He is. And it has nothing to do with you Alpha Caleb. I’m no longer your mate. No longer your wife. No longer anything to you. My life is my own and so are my relationships.” Daria lifted her chin defiantly glaring at me.

Her attitude towards me. I thought with frustration, was nothing short of exhausting. Why had she changed so much?

“What happened to you?” Those words left my lips so swiftly. She blinked in response, then her eyes narrowed at me. “You’re no longer the woman I knew. The girl who used to be my mate.”

She opened her mouth and-

Laughter.

It was low and mirthless, full of an unspoken emotion I dared not name.

Her reaction left me speechless, unable to gauge what would be the next cause of action.

“You’re right,” she spoke softly in a whisper. Immediately her laughter faded as quickly as it had begun. Her chest was heaving and her eyes looked glossy. She wasn’t angry. Instead I found I could hardly look away from the bitterness that was in her eyes. I swallowed at the depths of emotion in them.

She continued. “I have changed. I am no longer your mate Alpha Caleb. You know why? You want to know what happened to

me?”

Then her words gained a fervor so heated I nearly took a step back.

“You did. You happened to me. Everything I endured at your hands was the trigger I needed. I would never be that girl again. You want an obedient little maid that you can screw over any time you want. But I’m no longer that person. And you should thank the goddess that I have no desire to pay you back for all that you did to me.”

The room fell silent as she did. I grit my teeth as every bone in my body fought against my urge to take a step towards her. Her words had cut deep again. I was left in the throes of my last memories. Those times I knew that Daria had not been treated well but turned blind to it. Those times I ignored her needs. She was nothing to me then.

How had that very thing changed too?

The realization that Daria was never going to bend to my will was equal parts terrifying and infuriating. I was the Alpha of Wisteria pack. Under my leadership the pack had become even greater. I prided myself on being the best. A dominant alpha among alphas. And yet I couldn’t control HER anymore.

The knock that came on the door pulled me out of those raging thoughts that threatened to swallow me whole. Daria herself startled at the sound and raised her head. The door opened and maid walked in bowing.

“Dinner is ready,” the young maid announced before bowing again and leaving as quietly as she had arrived.

Chapter 9

The atmosphere of tension played on my mind and I turned to Rave without a word to Daria

She didn’t even raise her damn head to look at me as I was leaving. It left me unmoored and thinking over every last thing that had happened in the past. My mind was a battlefield of memories, thoughts and justifications.

But peace wasn’t to come wuickly as I entered the dining hall to nd Beta Raul of Dartmouth staring at the door from which I walked in. His eyes were full of expectation but it turned away the second I glanced at him.

Was he waiting to see Daria? To call her to him?

Jaw clenched. I approached the table. Each movement was calculated and choreographed to ensure I wouldn’t up and lose my temper. The table was laden with a feast worthy of kings. The delegates bowed to me and murmured their greetings as I took my place at the head of the table.

Then Daria walked in moments later, along with some other guests who were prominent members of our pack. She was set apart from them with her modest clothes. Despite how plain she looked though, there was no discounting her beauty. She shone like a gem.

I cleared my throat to order her to sit by my side but suddenly Raul stood and beckoned Daria to the seat across from him. Eyes watched as she smiled a little softer and willingly took the seat he had left open. My hands gripped the utensils tighter and I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.

“Hey Alpha. Tone it down on the staring. She’s not going anywhere yet,” Jacob, who was a few seats from me, spoke, keeping his tone light and voice low enough that only a few of us caught.

I let out a small growl at his words. He was arguably my best friend. Despite the fact that he wasn’t the Beta, Jacob was the only one I trusted among my circle so deeply. He had grown up alongside me, being taught by his grandfather who was an Elder. He was one of the only ones who knew just how much I had searched for Daria when she had suddenly disappeared.

My lips curled down into a scowl as I noticed Raul place some meat on Daria’s plate. His eyes were trained on her face as she spoke.

What the fuck did he think he was doing?

I longed to lunge at him and challenge him to a duel here and now. But that would disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the dinner. And worse it would affect the relationship between the Dartmouth Pack and the Wisteria Pack.

The meal tasted like ash in my mouth as I tried to ignore the sight of Raul shamelessly flirting with my mate before me.

The Dartmouth and Green Pack had approached me for one major reason: to handle rogues disturbing the area and lend them support.

For the past few months the news of such rogues had spread. Surprisingly the rogue group was not one we knew of. They were a team of quiet assailants that suddenly attacked chosen packs at random. The rogues also targeted packs in this region that were not so powerful to stand up to the group on their own

Last month alone I had sent some men to defend the borders of ive packs, the Dartmouth and Green packs included. Now they were here to demand more of our pack.

However I wasn’t going to let things go so easily. Defending the orders of other packs also meant reducing the strength of

our own.

If they required more of our help then I would be glad to make demands that would help my pack members too.

Several of my pack members were already deep in conversation with the delegates I had chosen the guests carefully after considering heir status and ability to be diplomatic. They would make the impression that I needed to

But then the conversation shifted turned into one topic that i ne her expect or want.
