I glared at Caleb with all my might. But he appeared unaffected. The study had fallen silent at the face of my confrontation, and Sabrina looked tense as her gaze flickered between Caleb ar 1.

“Daria, this has nothing to do with you. Leave,” Caleb growled a looked as imperious as ever. Ever the superior one between us. I grit my teeth and inhaled sharply as I fight to contol my anger.

“I won’t move a damn inch, Alpha Caleb, until you tell me what you plan on doing to her,” I replied with heat.

“She’s a maid at my mansion. In my pack. Since you dared call yourself an outsider,” Caleb smirked a little. “There should be none of your interference here. How I deal with MY servants is one of your business.”

“But how you treat my FRIEND is MY business,” I shot back without blinking. His gaze darkened and I met it head on.

“Luna… Daria, I,” Sabrina spoke up in a soft tone. “I can handle this. You don’t have to worry. Please.”

I didn’t miss the worry and anxiousness in her voice.

“No Sabrina. I will make sure that this doesn’t repeat itself ever again.” Shaking her hand off gently I crossed the distance between Caleb and I. This time I didn’t avoid his gaze and kept my eyes locked on his bold muscular frame.

“If I hadn’t heard that you summoned Sabrina to interrogate her then I wouldn’t have come in here like this,” I said to him whilst folding my arms across my chest. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

“I should be the one asking you that question, mate.”

He tilted his head at me as though he was aware of how hearing that title triggered an emotion I couldn’t understand.

“Did you think your actions wouldn’t have any consequences?” The Alpha of Wisteria Pack continued unashamed. “Leaving without so much as a word and thinking it wouldn’t come back haunt you? You dragged her into this. And now she will pay the price.”

My lips fell open in shock. What shamelessness had just come from him?

I had expected a lot but not this. Not the way he acted like he was entitled to me.

The air was thick with tension but before i could say something dispel it the knock on the door came.

I froze and turned to see the door open and a guard walking in. le bowed to Caleb who listened to the report with rapt

attention.

“The Green Pack and Dartmouth Pack delegates are here to see you Alpha.”

My ears pricked and I processed those words.

I hadn’t known he was expecting guests. Not that it had anything to do with me of course.

With a nod Caleb ordered the guard to have them brought up to see him

As the guard bowed and made his way out of the study I could a conflicted emotion in his eyes. It made me wonder what exactly was going on.

“This conversation will have to be postponed it seems, Caleb spike in the din of the late afternoon. His eyes gleamed with authority and his voice brokered no arguments. “But don’t think his is over.”

I could tell he had dismissed me again. Just like the way he used without even a glance. But this time his eyes met mine and there was determination in them. Something had changedd I didn’t know how that would affect this.

Brushing aside all errant thoughts I smiled grimly and bowed to Caleb as my station demanded.

His eyes didn’t leave mine and I dared not lower my head.

“Of course Alpha.” My tone dripped with derision and hatred. I wished I could leave this pack right now. But what sort of healer would I be if I did?

Then I turned around and walked towards the exit. Sabrina followed behind me as I pulled the door open and stepped out on my to nearly bump into a man.

“Oof-“I Nearly fell but steadied myself by bracing my hand against the wall.

“My apologies,” I heard the man say and I froze. That voice sounded all too familiar.

My eyes searching, I looked up to see the face of someone I had never expected in a million years.

“…Raul?” My voice was soft now and full of hesitation.

His eyes widened and he looked down at me. His grey eyes which were previously stoic and hardened warmed with a soft demeanor.

“Is that you Daria?” He looked shocked yet pleased.

I smiled broadly at him, gripping his arm tightly. It had been years since I’d seen Raul. When I was tormented by my father and kept like a prisoner at times, many people turned a blind eye. But the son of one of the warriors in the pack never did. Raul would always bring me gifts and stories from outside.

I remembered how once on my birthday he snuck in during a dinner party and spent time cheering me up.

And now, what felt like lifetimes later, he was here again.

Without hesitation he pulled me into a hug. I was taken aback by his strength briefly and I tensed a little. I was unused to such displays of affection. But slowly I relaxed as I heard Raul speak again with happiness tinging his deep hearty voice.

“By the goddess, I never expected to see you here of all places.”

All of a sudden, the tension I felt throughout the day seemed to helt away into nothing. I noticed Sabrina standing to the side, lingering awkwardly. Giving her a reassuring smile I asked Raul, “What are you doing here?”

“Well, work demanded it,” he replied with a soft chuckle. “I’m the Beta of the Dartmouth Pack. I thought I’d see the Alpha before the meetings officially start. There’s a lot to discuss.”

Despite the softness of his tone I could detect a hidden edge with his words.

This had to be serious.

Curious, I was about to ask for more details when a cold voice rang out behind me.

“I believe this conversation is over.”

Raul’s eyes flickered to just over my shoulder and back to my face before his expression shifted to a genial politeness.

“Alpha Caleb,” he nodded in greeting, moving to stand beside my “My apologies”

Hearing Raul’s calm response to Caleb filled me with frustration and annoyance. The last thing I wanted to do was to be in Caleb’s presence for longer than necessary.

“It’s time for me to check on my patient,” 1 announced calmly willout sparing a glance for Caleb. Despite that I could feel his gaze boring holes into me.

Turning to Raul I have a small smile.

His lips twitched as our eyes bet briefly. From the corner I could sense Caleb’s expression getting darker. But I didn’t care.

I made my exit and moved down the hallway towards the Elder room.

Jacob had long left and I relished in the quietness of the atmosphere. Moving to open the windows and let some fresh air in, I checked his vitals.
