Jessie turned to leave, feeling indignant and angry. Just then, she saw Alexander come out of the elevator and walk in her direction. She stopped where she was, feeling nervous as he brushed past her.
However, he didn't seem to even see her. Maybe it was because he was arrogant, or maybe it was just because he didn't even remember Jessie.
The conversation in the private room was amicable… until Alexander arrived. He got straight to the point and said, "Mr. Logan, Mrs. Logan, and Ms. Logan, I apologize for this sudden dinner. The reason for this get-together is that I wanted to come clean about something—I want to call off the engagement."
Silence descended upon the room at his words.
Priscilla stared at him in disbelief and asked, "W-What did you say, Alexander?"
Alexander held his head high. His attitude was lackadaisical, but his tone was firm. He didn't seem to notice the tense faces around the table as he said, "I said, I want to call off my engagement to Ms. Logan."
Priscilla couldn't even force a smile anymore but still tried to stay composed. "Is there some sort of misunderstanding, Alexander? We've been preparing for this for so long—"
"There's no misunderstanding," Alexander cut in. He swept a gaze over Stanley's and Priscilla's darkened expressions and continued, "Ms. Logan is a lovely and outstanding woman, but we feel nothing for each other.
"I only agreed to the engagement before this because I was going along with what my family wanted. But now that I've thought things through, I don't see the need to force myself to do something I don't want to. I also don't want to hold Ms. Logan back."
Stanley slammed his glass on the table, letting out a loud thud that cut through the tense silence. "Alexander Sinclair! It's not up to you to play fast and loose with something as important as marriage! The Logans are a prestigious family. It'd be such a disgrace to us if you were to just call off the engagement like this!"
Alexander looked at him. His tone was no longer as flippant as before, but he was still unyielding. "Mr. Logan, saying no to an unwanted marriage is barely grounds for humiliation."
At that moment, Theodore, who hadn't spoken thus far, rapped his knuckles on the table. His gaze landed on Alexander as he said, "Alexander, sit down so that we can talk this through properly. Don't push things too far."
Isabella surreptitiously scanned the Logans from her seat beside Theodore's. Stanley looked furious, Priscilla was clutching her chest, and Natalie sat there quietly, looking like this had nothing to do with her.
Stanley's anger had long been quelled by this "compensation". The Logan family's cash flow had been strained lately, and he'd been worrying about not having any chances to take on major projects. Theodore's offer had given him the way out he needed.
He put down his glass and forced a smile. "Well, since you've covered all bases, I'll graciously accept the offer! As for the engagement… It all boils down to Alexander and Natalie not being meant for each other. This won't affect the friendship between our families."
Theodore said, "Of course."
They sipped their tea together.
Just then, someone knocked on the door. After being permitted to enter, four servers came in, each carrying one dish.
Isabella looked up and saw Jessie. She was serving the food when her hand shook, making her spill soup on Alexander. She cried, "I'm so sorry, sir! Please, let me take you to a room so that you can change into something clean."
