“You want an abortion?” The doctor looked at her like she’d lost her mind and asked again and again. “Have you really thought this through? You got pregnant through IVF. You’re just going to give it up like that?”
Charlotte pressed a hand to her lower belly, her chest tightening until it hurt.
This baby was a piece of her flesh and blood. How could she feel nothing?
It was only… the timing was wrong.
“Doctor, I’ve decided. I want to terminate it.”
“Well.” The doctor’s face fell as he exhaled hard. “What is wrong with you young people? One minute you want it, the next minute you don’t. No sense of responsibility at all.”
Charlotte couldn’t explain. She could only stand there and take the scolding.
The doctor filled out the paperwork. “Go get an ultrasound first. We’ll look at the specifics and then talk.”
Lying on the bed in the ultrasound room, Charlotte cried for the first time.
The technician thought she was nervous and smiled, trying to reassure her.
“Don’t be scared. First-time moms are always like this-worrying about everything. Relax. A baby’s life isn’t as fragile as you think. And you know what? Later on, your baby will definitely be as pretty as you.”
He shouldn’t have said that.
The moment he did, Charlotte’s tears completely broke loose.
Baby… I’m sorry…
Clutching the report, Charlotte stood outside the doctor’s office for a while.
She knew exactly what it would mean to step through that door again.
But she had to.
She took a deep breath, pushed the door open, and handed the report to the doctor.

“The gestational sac is too small. During the procedure, there’s a chance we could miss suction and end up with an incomplete abortion. That would mean a second uterine
evacuation, and that can damage your body. So it’s best to wait another seven to ten days.”
Charlotte froze for a few seconds. “Can’t you do it today?”
The doctor’s face hardened immediately. “Are you kidding me? You care so little about
your own body just to have an abortion? What, do you have a grudge against this child? You have to get rid of it today?”
Charlotte wanted to tell him that she didn’t have a grudge against the baby.
But against the baby’s biological father? It was hatred as deep as the ocean.
“It’s only a few days,” the doctor added, still irritated. “Wait. It’s a good chance to go
home and build up your strength. An abortion isn’t considered major surgery, but it still
harms your body. Eat more these next few days, take supplements. Don’t get too
skinny.”
He thought it was a pity and couldn’t help trying to persuade her.
“And use these days to think about it again. See if you want to keep the child.”
Keep it?
Charlotte didn’t hesitate for even half a second.
Impossible.
Unless Matthew hadn’t lent his sperm. Unless there hadn’t been betrayal and harm.
Maybe then… she could’ve considered keeping it.
But Matthew was filthy.
The Matthew she’d loved three years ago had already died.
The Matthew of today to Charlotte was like a fly crawling over a trash heap.
It made her sick.
At noon, she went home.

The villa that was usually cold and quiet was suddenly loud and crowded.
Three luxury cars were parked outside the front gate.
Archer and two other drivers were carrying suitcases into the house.
Inside was nothing but laughter and cheerful voices.
Even when Charlotte walked in, nobody acknowledged her.
It was only when Mila saw her that she called out loudly, “Young Madam, you’re back.”
Everyone turned to look.
None of those looks were friendly.
Charlotte felt like a stranger who’d barged into someone else’s home-unwelcome in
every possible way.
Lillian wore a pale lavender cheongsam and sat there like a queen holding court.
“You’re back and you don’t even greet anyone. You don’t know the rules anymore?”
Charlotte walked over and greeted them properly. “Grandma. Mom.”
“Mm.” Lillian forced the sound out of her throat. “Matt should’ve told you already. From
now on, we’ll all be living here together.”
Charlotte said, “I know.”
Lillian’s gaze sharpened. “You don’t have any objections, do you?”
Charlotte was about to speak.
Everly cut in first. “Mom, this is the Russell family’s home. What objections could she
possibly have?”
Lillian gave a token cough. “You can’t put it like that. This is still the place she and Matt
live. We elders can’t be like some rude juniors who don’t know their place.”
Everly replied obediently, “Yes, Mom. I understand.”
Charlotte sneered inside.
Did they think she was three years old-putting on a little duet for her?

In the open, in the shadows, they’d still found a way to scold her.
“Charlie.”
Isabella called her, but her butt didn’t move an inch from the couch.
“Sorry. We’re going to be bothering you and Matt from now on.”

Charlotte pulled up a smile. “Don’t mention it. We’re family. I couldn’t be happier that
you’re coming to live here, Bella.”
Isabella blinked, momentarily stunned.
This woman… wasn’t following the script.
Shouldn’t she be screaming and making a scene?
Isabella kept going anyway. “Mom just said the bedroom you’re in has the best location.
Warm in winter, cool in summer. She wants to give it to me.’
“But I thought it wouldn’t be fair to you, Charlie, so I insisted I couldn’t take it.”
Charlotte’s expression didn’t change. “Tonight I’ll clear out the room. You and the baby
can take it. I’ll stay in a guest room.”
Isabella’s heart leaped, but she still said sweetly, “That’s so embarrassing. It makes me
look like I’m taking over your home.”
Charlotte rolled her eyes inside.
This wasn’t “taking over.”
This was straight-up stealing someone else’s nest.
The mistress had shown up at her door, and her in-laws were all backing her.
Charlotte was the only one left fighting alone. If she didn’t use her brain, she’d lose.
“It’s fine,” Charlotte said calmly. “You’re pregnant now. Consider it for the baby. That
room should go to you anyway.”
Lillian cleared her throat. “Bella, since your sister-in-law says so, stop refusing. We’re all
family. No need to be so polite. Just live there.”
Isabella answered softly, “Then I’ll listen to Grandma.”

Then she deliberately added, “Thank you, Charlie.”
Charlotte tugged the corner of her mouth. “You’re welcome.”

Natalie was still holding onto the anger from yesterday, when she’d been put in her
place by Charlotte. She pouted and muttered, “Hypocritical!”
Charlotte heard it.
