“I stayed in Bella’s room last night because Joseph seemed kind of unwell. He kept

fussing. Only when I held him would he calm down.”

Charlotte’s brows lifted slightly. A faint, cool smile showed on her face. “That’s great.

Father and son share the same thought.”

Matthew was still wrapped up in his own explanation. “So it was purely because of the

child. Don’t overthink it.”

Charlotte caught the wrongness immediately.

Matthew explaining himself to her? That was rare.

“Why are you suddenly explaining this to me?”

Matthew said, “I don’t want you to misunderstand.”

Charlotte mocked him silently.

A brother spending an entire night in his sister-in-law’s room-whether anything

happened or not-was already the definition of indecent.

She didn’t believe Matthew had no idea what boundaries were.

In the end, he cared about the kid, sure-but he cared even more about Isabella.

Charlotte couldn’t be bothered to listen to his nonsense.

“I’m leaving. I might come back late tonight.”

Matthew grabbed her.

“I still have something to say.”

Charlotte swallowed her impatience. “Go ahead.”

Matthew asked, “Do you really want to divorce me?”

Charlotte wished she could say yes.

But she couldn’t actually say that out loud.

She couldn’t wait for Matthew to divorce her.

Just not right now.

If it ended too fast, it would only hurt her.

Charlotte responded in a flat tone, “It’s you who makes me feel like you want to divorce

me.”

Matthew released his grip, like he’d finally breathed out.

“I have no intention of divorcing you.”

Charlotte wasn’t moved by that at all.

If anything, it weighed on her.

She tested the waters carefully. “If we divorced, wouldn’t that be better for you? You

could marry your brother’s wife, and then your family of three could finally be together.”

The moment he heard it, Matthew’s face darkened.

“What are you saying? What family of three? How could I possibly marry Bella? If I did

that, how would I face John?”

Charlotte wanted to laugh.

Those words were contradiction at its finest.

Marrying Isabella would be ‘letting John down.’

But having an affair with Isabella—and even having a child with her-somehow wasn’t

letting John down?

So that was it. Lies really did come down to whoever had the mouth to tell them.

However he spun it, he could always sound righteous.

A wave of disgust rose in her, and the words burst out before she could stop them.

“If you won’t marry her, then can you stand it? Your own biological son calling you

‘Uncle’ for the rest of his life?”

Matthew froze slightly.

Because she’d hit the exact place he kept hidden.

He’d thought about that question countless times.

Joseph was his child, but he couldn’t even hear the boy call him “Dad”.

Charlotte watched him quietly, watching the expression on his face change again and

again in just a few seconds.

She wanted to hear what Matthew would say.

But he just shoved the topic aside.

“Charlie, what happened today put you through a lot. But I’ll make it up to you.”

That line again.

Charlotte deliberately pressed with a fake smile, “Make it up to me how? You won’t even

give me the Moon Garden you promised.”

Matthew choked on his words for a while.

“I can talk it over with Bella again.”

Charlotte wanted to slap him.

Matthew had truly forgotten that she, Charlotte, was his legal wife.

A wife asks her husband for something, and the husband has to ‘discuss it’ with the

mistress?

What a joke!

“Don’t drink.”

Behind her came that concerned reminder.

Charlotte didn’t turn back.

Concern that arrived too late couldn’t warm a heart that had already gone cold.

What was the point of offering an umbrella after the rain had stopped?

Mila walked by with a mop, flicking her gaze at Matthew as he watched Charlotte leave.

“Ah, our eldest young madam really is a knockout-gorgeous enough to topple cities. If my useless son could marry a woman even half as outstanding as her, I’d be praying

every day, thanking God for blessing us.”

Matthew withdrew his gaze, frowning slightly. “Mila, aren’t you talking a little too

much?”

Mila said, “Oh? Are you going to kick me out too?”

Matthew had no idea how to respond.

Mila had spent more time by Matthew’s side than even Everly.

So in Matthew’s eyes, she was no longer just an ordinary servant.

Suddenly, Matthew felt that habits really were terrifying.

Just like how he’d gotten used to that woman being there.

And when he thought about the day they might go their separate ways, it left him

feeling kind of empty inside.

Charlotte took the necklace to a jewelry store.

The strange part was, the owner didn’t even open the box. He accepted it and put it

away immediately.

Charlotte was stunned. “Sir, you’re not even going to check it?”

The owner paused. “No need. Miss, you look like an honest, trustworthy person. There’s

no way you’d try to fake anything.”

Charlotte felt like something was off, but she couldn’t find any proof of what, exactly.

She decided to let it go. The money was in her hands.

Whatever.

Once the important errand was done, Charlotte was about to call Ruby.

But Margaret’s call came.

“Charlie! Come back right now! Something happened to your dad!”

Before Charlotte could ask what was going on, the call cut off.

Charlotte’s heart dropped hard. She rushed home without stopping.

The front door was shut tight. Everything was quiet.

But the moment she pushed the door open, Charlotte went rigid.
